April 8, 2021 GMT
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska colleges and universities are encouraging students to get vaccinated for the coronavirus, but they won’t require the shots before students return to campus in the fall.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Nebraska State College System and the state’s largest private colleges all said this week that they have no plans to require students or staff to get vaccinated, according to the Lincoln Journal Star.

“We do think they are a good idea, and we would encourage people to get vaccinated,” UNL spokeswoman Leslie Reed said. “But we don’t plan to mandate that.”

Data Collection Project to Help Farmers Address Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Leslie Reed (University of Nebraska–Lincoln/Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute/Nebraska Today) University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers affiliated with the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute have received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to better quantify carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions connected with corn production fields in the Midwest.
The high-tech effort is included in the first phase of the Smart Farms program launched by the Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. The data gathered during the three-year project will help inform American farmers to improve their operations and participate in bioenergy and carbon markets expected to develop in coming years.

UNL to participate in genome sequencing to track COVID-19 variants on campus

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will begin participating in virus sequencing of positive on-campus COVID-19 saliva samples to track the spread of potential COVID-19 variants.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services requested the genomic sequencing to analyze the structure of the virus to discern mutations of COVID-19, which will be done through the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, according to an update to Nebraska Today’s COVID-19 Digest page on March 28.
Privacy laws prohibit identification of individuals who test positive for COVID-19, and results will be communicated privately and securely to UNL community members through the Safer Community app and UNL’s online portal.
