Cape Coral, Fort Myers inching closer to lessening pedestrian danger

During the briefing two women shared stories of how pedestrian deaths directly  affected them.
Latanya Byrd, of Philadelphia, lost her niece and three nephews eight years ago while they were attempting to cross a 12-lane road. Two vehicles were racing down the boulevard leaving them dead.
Kailey Kiss, a University of Florida student, lost a sorority sister and witnessed another classmate be struck and killed by a vehicle when waiting to cross University Avenue, a state road that borders Gainesville university.
Since then, Kiss founded Not One More, an organization dedicated to improving street safety on college campuses.

It dropped three spots to 11th from eighth among the top 100 United States Metropolitan statistical areas for pedestrian danger. ....

Still bad, Jacksonville drops in ranking of top pedestrian dangers

“These places were so dangerous to begin with,” said Rayla Bellis, a program manager with Smart Growth America, a Washington-based nonprofit whose report was sponsored by backers including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The shift, she said, only made them “slightly less dangerous.”
On an index where the average community score was 63.3, Jacksonville scored 204.7.
The index uses a yearly rate of pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 people in the Jacksonville area, based on fatalities over 10 years, 2010 to 2019. That rate rose from the 2019 report, which was based on an earlier 10-year bundle of data, because the number of deaths increased faster than the population. ....
