Florida jobless rate dips slightly in December as 18,000 fewer in state considered unemployed
Florida’s jobless rate dipped 0.2 percentage points in December amid what state officials said is growing economic confidence as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
The state Department of Economic Opportunity on Friday announced a 6.1 percent unemployment rate, down from 6.3 percent in November. The new rate reflected 614,000 Floridians qualifying as being out of work in December down 18,000 from a month earlier out of a workforce of more than 10.14 million.
Adrienne Johnston, the department’s chief economist, pointed to continued growth in seasonal hiring.
“When we look at our November and October rates, where you start to see seasonal employment grow, this month (December) outperformed those months,” Johnston said. “So, it just generally reflects a growing confidence in businesses reopening and adding jobs and individuals going back into the labor market and ....

Polk County sees slight uptick in unemployment in November

LAKELAND Polk County s downward trend in unemployment came to a halt last month.
The state reported Friday that the unemployment rate for Polk County was 7.4% for November, just up from the 7.1% reported in October. And the number is more than double the 3.3% rate reported in November 2019.
Jim Farrell, associate professor of finance and economics at Florida Southern College, said the numbers weren t surprising.
The big gains in unemployment after the economy was sort of restarted after the summer shutdowns have played their way through the economy, Farrell said. And now, these are the hard unemployment numbers, to get back to where we were before. ....

Flagler County’s unemployment rate in November rose slightly to 5.9 percent, from a revised 5.5 percent in October, as Florida’s rate remained unchanged at 6.4 percent, signaling a deepening stall of economic activity since summer’s end as the coronavirus continues to take a human and economic toll in the state: seasonal hiring has not materialized as it has in less diseased years.
The number of Flagler County residents holding jobs was flat, at 43,652, still almost 2,000 job-holders fewer than a year ago, with 200 more Flagler residents on the unemployment rolls in November, compared to October. The number of unemployed is almost certainly an undercount as it reflects only thgose who are following the state’s stringent rules to qualify for unemployment. TALLAHASSEE Florida’s unemployment rate held steady in November, as businesses did not boost seasonal hiring as much as usual amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state Department of Economic Opportunity on Friday posted a 6.4 percent jobless rate for November, equal to a revised jobless mark for October. The rate indicates 651,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed in mid-November, just 7,000 fewer than a month earlier.
The October mark had initially been estimated at 6.5 percent before being revised. The unemployment rate in November 2019, before the pandemic hammered the economy, was 2.8 percent. ....
