Former Lubbock Mayor Granberry, who helped lead city after 1970 tornado, dies at 89
He was 89 when he died over the weekend.
Granberry had been in office just 19 days when a powerful tornado system ripped through the city, leaving 26 dead, many more injured and hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage.
The former city councilman had been elected as Lubbock s youngest mayor at age 37 in a landslide victory and credited advice from a friend for convincing him to take the mayor s seat early rather than waiting for results of another run-off election on the council.
Granberry emphasized that it took a community-wide effort to help rebuild the city after the storm, writing a reflection piece for the Avalanche-Journal ahead of the 49th anniversary in May 2019. ....

Lonnie Hollingsworth, president of the National Association of Retail Druggists (now NCPA) in 1986-87, passed away Jan. 18 in Lubbock, Texas. He went on to serve as treasurer of the NCPA Foundation Board. Hollingsworth, 88, also served as president of the Texas Pharmacy Association and the West Texas Pharmacists Association, which he helped found. He was named Texas Pharmacist of the year in 1981 and 2001 and served as chairman of the Dean s Advisory Council for the University of Texas School of Pharmacy and served on the Dean s Advisory Council for the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy. Hollingsworth won the NCPA Foundation’s prestigious John W. Dargavel Medal in 2007. He was a remarkable person, a self-made man who worked his way through college and was valedictorian of his class. He owned L & H Pharmacies in Lubbock. He was a generous man to both pharmacy and philanthropy, said NCPA Foundation Presiden ....
