Addressing the San Diego region’s limited local water supplies with innovative ideas is something the San Diego County Water Authority has become known for. Using expertise gained from decades of successful planning and projects, the Water Authority is developing strategies to reduce the future cost of water that sustains the economy and quality of life across the county.
Those efforts are ramping up in early 2021, following a Water Authority Board decision to continue assessing the potential for a new aqueduct to transport San Diego’s low-cost, high-priority water supplies from the Colorado River to San Diego County. About 50 percent of the region’s current water supplies are from this independent source, and it is the region’s lowest base-cost supply. ....

As a part of his initiative to ensure more diversity, inclusion and equity in the City of San Diego, Mayor Todd Gloria announced the formation of his administration’s Black Advisory Group and the selection of nine outstanding San Diegans who will make up this group of Black advisers.
“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to assemble such an accomplished group of individuals who will strengthen our efforts to create a more inclusive San Diego,” Gloria said. “I recognize the disparities our Black communities face related to education, access to healthcare, mental health, housing, transportation, food insecurity, employment and entrepreneurship and I firmly believe their input will get us on the right track of equity.” ....

In 1979, Herman was due for a sabbatical leave. My friend, Alice Sargeant, Dean of a Catholic college in Washington, D.C., where I taught on weekends, told us about her house in La Jolla, a village in Southern California. She did not have any renters that winter and would let us have it at a reasonable price. We accepted the offer having no idea what was in store for us, but we were ready for a warmer winter. It turned out to be a lovely house right on the beach. Herman swam in the ocean all winter long saying that the Pacific Ocean was warmer in the winter than the Atlantic Ocean was in the summer. Alice had written to some of her friends asking them to welcome us, so we had a ready-made community. After spending that winter in La Jo ....

Local character and comedic actor Mark Atkinson scored a supporting role in the recent Netflix show “Selena: The Series” about the late Latina singer’s rise to stardom.
“My part in Selena is not huge, the show is huge,” said Atkinson, a Rhode Island native. “I guess I had the right look of a restaurant manager.”
“Selena: The Series,” which is filmed at Baja Studios in Rosarito, Mexico, is a coming-of-age story about the late Selena Quintanilla’s journey to fame as she became one of music’s biggest Latino crossover artists. The show explores Selena’s path to success, along with her family, before she was murdered in 1995 and became a legendary Mexican icon whose legacy endures. ....
