SAN DIEGO Community leaders on Wednesday urged the county Board of Supervisors to pass an anticipated resolution in support of a sweeping federal police reform bill named after George Floyd. “I call on our supervisors to do what is right,” the Rev. Shane Harris, a civil rights activist, said during a news conference outside the County Administration Building. The Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday whether to direct the chief administrative officer to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on the county’s behalf. Among several reforms, the legislation would ban chokeholds, racial profiling and qualified immunity, a court-established concept that shields police officers and other government officials from lawsuits except in cases in which officials violate “clearly established” constitutional rights. ....

The event organized by the Latino American Political Association (LAPA), Albondigas of South County, and the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was held at a Cuban restaurant in San Diego. Former San Diego City Councilmember, Ed Harris and San Diego Mayor, Kevin L. Faulconer, both candidates on the ballot for City of San Diego mayor, attended the event. Lori Saldaña Calls for Fair Campaign By Alexandra Mendoza Mayoral candidate Lori Saldaña has accused her opponent, incumbent Kevin Faulconer, of purportedly trying to obtain her personal information, and is once again asking for him to commit to a race free of personal attacks. The document the Independent candidate is invoking is the Code of Fair Campaign Practices, which is routinely adopted by candidates in order to “preserve the dignity of the electoral process,” by refraining from the use of “defamation, slander, or rumors against any candidate, their personal life, or their family”. So far, only Saldaña and Democratic candidate Ed Harris have signed the pledge, and she is asking the incumbent to do the same. ....
