Our editors and writers scour the city each week for the most thoughtful, relevant and exciting new exhibitions and artworks on view at galleries, museums and public venues across all five boroughs of New York. This week we recommend:

Lorraine O’Grady: Both/And
Until 18 July at the Brooklyn Museum
At 86-years-old, the US artist Lorraine O’Grady is receiving her first major museum retrospective, which represents four decades of the artist’s work. O’Grady began making art in her mid-40s, and her multimedia practice which spans performance, collage, video, and more is a beacon of rigorously honed cultural and institutional critique, that remains both fiercely smart and full of play and ebullience. O’Grad ....

Catherine Damman, Mira Dayal, and David Velasco reflect on O'Grady's many achievements

“BOTH/AND” is the title of Lorraine O’Grady’s first major retrospective, curated by Catherine Morris and Aruna D’Souza and opening this month at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. But it is also the key to the artist’s exhilarating proposition: that the best path through the tepid “either/or” structure subtending Western hegemony is the cultivation of a hybrid and nonhierarchical “both/and” approach. “The governing aim of my work is to undermine the concept of opposites,” Lorraine O’Grady wrote in 1982; few artists have furnished such fruitful manifestations of their ideals. On the occasion of this ....

Lorraine O'Grady: Both/And | Apollo Magazine

While some museums are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are currently open as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture.
Since adopting the party-crashing persona of Mlle Bourgeoise Noire in the early 1980s, Lorraine O’Grady has blurred the lines between performance, politics and conceptual art. This career retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum (5 March–18 July) focuses on 12 major projects over the past four decades – including
Miscegenated Family Album (1994), a photo-installation that presented images of Queen Nefertiti alongside O’Grady’s late sister, and ....
