Montgomery: Alabama public health officials are warning people to avoid eating any fish from some state waterways because of contamination. The state Department of Public Health issued its latest fish consumption advisories this month. They are based on nearly 500 samples of specific fish species taken during the fall of 2020 from 41 bodies of water, health officials said. Restrictions on consumption are broken down by waterbody and presented as the safe number of meals of a species that can be eaten in a given period of time. In some locations, people are advised to avoid all fish. Mercury is often cited as the fish contaminant of concern.

Landau Murphy, WV Dept of Ed partner to promote adult education

CHARLESTON — On his 46th birthday, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. officially earned his high school diploma.
Now, saying age is just a number, the Logan County native and former winner of “America’s Got Talent” is encouraging others to do the same.
Murphy has partnered with the West Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Adult Education to be the face of the office’s “Never Too Late to Graduate” campaign. The initiative is personal for Murphy, who went back to school and obtained his diploma last year.
“The process was weird because now you’ve got to put your mindset in high school and I’m 30 years away from that,” Murphy said. “I found it very interesting, and the more that I was in it, I loved it.”

West Virginia Freedom Festival energizes downtown Logan

LOGAN — The City of Logan wrapped up its 22nd year of the West Virginia Freedom Festival this past Sunday.
According to Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti, this year marked the second time in the festival’s history the city held events on a Sunday, which city leaders decided to do since the Fourth of July holiday fell on that day.
There wasn’t much this year’s festival didn’t offer over the five-day span. Carnival rides and attractions were provided by Gambill Amusements from Buckhannon, and Circus Incredible held shows on the Honaker Funeral Home lot.
In the front lot of the West Virginia State Building downtown, festivalgoers could participate in karaoke. Near McCormick’s, attendees could climb a rock wall or win a prize by doing a number of pullups within a certain amount of time. At the same location was the Great American Duck Race from Deming, New Mexico, racing live mallard ducks for prizes.
