The COVID-19 outbreak at Spring Valley Seniors Community long-term care in Kelowna is now over.
There were 48 cases of COVID-19 linked to the outbreak affecting 36 residents and 12 staff, according to an Interior Health media release. Twelve people died due to their illness.
An outbreak is declared over when two incubation periods, or 28 days, have passed from the last onset of symptoms in a resident.
Spring Valley Seniors Community is a long-term care facility operated by Park Place Seniors Living with 150 publicly-funded long-term care beds and one privately funded bed.

The COVID-19 death toll at a Kelowna long-term care home continues to rise.
Today, May 25, Interior Health reported that Spring Valley long-term care is now reporting two more deaths related to a COVID-19 outbreak, raising the total to 10. There are 48 cases, 36 of which are affecting residents, 12 are within the staff.
Spring Valley can house 150 residents and it is near capacity. Currently, it s the only outbreak in Interior Health.
Today, the province reported 289 new cases of COVID-19, with 3,782 being active cases.
Of the active cases, 301 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 93 of whom are in intensive care. ....

Coronavirus outbreak that killed 2 at Kelowna retirement home has ended, Interior Health says

VANCOUVER
A COVID-19 outbreak that killed two residents of a retirement home in B.C. s Interior is now over, according to the local health authority.
Interior Health announced the end of the outbreak at Sandalwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna on Saturday.
“I want to thank the staff and community for their dedication during this outbreak.” said Susan Brown, Interior Health s president and CEO, in a news release.
“On behalf of Interior Health, I extend our condolences to the family of the two residents who passed away during the outbreak.”
The outbreak was declared on April 22 after 11 residents and one staff member at the independent living facility tested positive for the coronavirus. ....

The death toll due to COVID-19 at the Spring Valley Care Centre in Kelowna has climbed to seven as of today.
But Interior Health’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Albert de Villiers, cast doubts on how many of those deaths – and many others in the province – are actually due to COVID-19.
“If somebody dies while they have got COVID in the hospital or in the community, they’re counted as a COVID death,” he said during a news briefing today, May 14. “So, if I’m 89 years old, I tested positive for COVID on Tuesday, on Wednesday I die of a heart attack or I have palliative cancer and on Thursday I die because of the cancer, it’s still going to be counted as a COVID death at that point because I had COVID.” ....
