Three of the largest law-enforcement agencies in Alachua County have installed license plate recognition cameras to help them better respond to vehicle-related accidents and crimes.
The Gainesville and University of Florida police departments and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office say the cameras – known as LPRs – are used to determine “vehicles of interest.” ....

Driver ticketed in Ocala crash that killed motorcyclist

Prosecutors at the State Attorney s Office were given a copy of Wright s report. They felt Hughes had not committed a crime and therefore declined to file any charges.
Just after 9 a.m. on Nov. 24, the 58-year-old Ocala woman was driving an older model Nissan Titan truck southbound on Northeast Eighth Avenue and stopped at the light at Silver Springs Boulevard.
A man, later identified as Ray Leverne Kessinger, 37, of Dunnellon, was riding a Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle westbound on the boulevard in the outside lane approaching Eighth Avenue.
Wright interviewed Hughes, who said she was talking with her daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle, about food and Thanksgiving. She said she was stopped in the inside left turn lane at the intersection. ....

It always draws many more people on Easter so two years ago it was moved to the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center off Northeast Eighth Avenue and Waldo Road with the city s blessing, said John Alexander of GPD s Youth and Community Services Division.
It was not held last year because of COVID-19. This year the organizers moved it to MLK on their own. At some point, teens and young adults left to start a spinoff at McPherson.
You saw an uprising of a younger generation that did not necessarily want to participate in the (MLK) one, Alexander said. It was very organized the promoters did an awesome job. When you traveled down to (McPherson) it was a much younger crowd initially . but ultimately all ages were down there. ....

Suspect arrested in one of several shootings
Police have arrested a suspect in one of several shootings over the past two days.
Lakecia Unique Dean, 33, is charged with Attempt Murder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Dean is accused of wounding three people on Jan 13 in the 100 block of Southeast 146th Avenue (case number 21-12117).
The names and conditions of the victims were not immediately released. The shootings continue a surge that started in the middle of last year and has continued into 2021.
The most recent investigation began at 12:33 a.m. on Jan. 15 wheh East Precinct officers responded to reports of a residence struck by gunfire in the 2800 block of Southeast 125th Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they found evidence of gunfire including several bullet strikes to the residence as well as bullet strikes to a vehicle in the driveway. ....
