NORTH ADAMS â Once considered a rising star in the Massachusetts Senate, Ben Downing surprised many when he walked away in 2016, fulfilling a promise to serve no more than 10 years, despite colleaguesâ pleas for him to stay.
Few expected Downing, now 39, to leave public service for long. Downingâs entry into the 2022 race for governor, which he announced Monday, doesnât shock anyone who knows him well.

Downing says he is running with a sense of urgency to tackle economic inequality, climate change and wide-ranging racial disparities.

WARE Baystate Health, while explaining this week the rationale behind its planned shutdown of the Mary Lane Outpatient Center, said that of the 28 patients per day seeking care at Mary Lane’s emergency room, over 85 percent present with common, minor, non-urgent conditions which could be treated in a primary care setting.
But to Tracy Opalinski of Ware, that means four of the 28 patients each day are experiencing a life-threatening situation and need to get to an emergency room right away. ....

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Earle Wayne Wilk Wilkins Jr. on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020.
Wilk died at home and at peace. He was 101 years old. His last days were in keeping with all his days: uncommonly attentive to others, driven to get the very most out of life.
Wilk grew up in Rensselaer, N.Y., and after graduating from he Albany Academy in 1937 and went on to Williams College, where he majored with honors in chemistry, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude in 1941. While at Williams he also played varsity football and baseball, and served as president of both his class and his fraternity setting up a lifetime relationship with the College that spanned nearly 84 years, including as a dedicated member of the board of trustees and president of the Society of Alumni. ....

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. Janet Beattie Filiault, 88, of Williamstown, died peacefully on December 11 at Albany Medical Center, after a long decline in health, slipping away from her family quietly in her sleep. Janet was the devoted wife of Edward A. Filiault, and they celebrated their 60th diamond wedding anniversary before his passing in 2018. Janet and Bud met working together at the Boston Store as teenagers, and she mourned every day without him. We fervently believe he welcomed her with open arms and couldn’t wait to have her by his side again.
Born during the Great Depression in North Adams to Thomas and Mildred McDonald Beattie, Janet was a lifelong Massachusetts resident who strongly objected, as a devoted Red Sox fan, to moving recently to New York Yankee territory to be nearer to her daughters. She attended Drury High School, graduating from Cushing Academy and Bay Path Junior College, and worked in a bank until her marriage. Janet was a homemaker mo ....
