SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Central School District has proposed a budget for next year that would meet the tax cap exactly and raise spending minimally.
A public hearing on the budget will be held Wednesday, and voters will take a vote on it May 18.
The $33.7 million budget increased $100,000 from last year, a 0.3% rise in spending.
The tax levy — the amount to be collected from property taxpayers — is set at $22,710,715, an increase of $370,071 from last year, a 1.66% rise. This matches this year’s state-imposed tax cap for the district.

LAKE PLACID — After taking the weekend off, construction crews upgrading Main Street plan to continue their excavation of the water main from Monday, May 3 to Friday, May 7, according to Haley Breen, community development director for the town of North Elba and village of Lake Placid.
Crews expect to install 100 feet of 16-inch water line each day, working from the north end of the village. They will pressure test and disinfect the new water line from Saranac Avenue to Hayes Street and will begin connecting services to each building in that area once test results are approved.

Baker Mountain and Moody Pond | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:
Baker Mountain and Moody Pond are wonderful natural resources for our communities. Forest Hill Avenue around Moody Pond is mainly in the village of Saranac Lake, with small portions within the domains of the towns of St. Armand and North Elba. The trailhead is controlled by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in hikers on Baker Mountain. This has exasperated the limited parking by the trailhead. It has also caused more traffic on Forest Hill Avenue. We have also seen an increase in pedestrian and bicycle use. Pedestrians and bicycles have been reported to be using both sides and the middle of the road.

LAKE PLACID — The state of New York is giving a Westchester County developer a big boost of capital to help build 60 apartments deemed affordable for local workers — something identified as being in critically short supply here.
The Wesvalley Road project is the only one in the North Country included in a new round of grants meant to fund 1,054 affordable housing units statewide. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the news Wednesday. This latest round, which the state said totaled $98 million, is part of the five-year, $20 billion Housing and Homelessness Plan the state Legislature passed in 2017.

SUPERVISOR SPOTLIGHT: Jay Rand talks about issues facing town | News, Sports, Jobs

Jay Rand
LAKE PLACID — As the town gets ready for the 2023 Winter World University Games, there are a number of issues facing the community, including short-term rentals, tourism, overuse of the High Peaks, the coronavirus pandemic and the state’s new law legalizing recreation marijuana use.
North Elba town Supervisor Jay Rand touched on some of those issues during an interview with Lake Placid News Editor Andy Flynn on Monday, April 12. Below is part of that interview.

LPN: What are some of the biggest issues facing Essex County right now?
Rand: I think a lot of it has been keeping up with the COVID issues this past year. Every day, (Board of Supervisors Chairman) Shaun Gillilland has been in communication with the state of New York and then passing the information on to us. We’ve really not been able to have a lot of face-to-face meetings. It’s all been Zoom. I think last week was the first one we’ve had for quite some time where we actually were in Elizabethtown all together. … A lot of it has been related to the health department and keeping up with clinics and getting transportation restarted.
