Lake Placid hotel changes chain in redevelopment plan | News, Sports, Jobs

eizzo@adirondackdailyenterprise.com
LAKE PLACID — The Quality Inn on Saranac Avenue will be converted to a Cambria-brand hotel rather than a Homewood Suites and Tru-branded hotel.
Developers of the Lake Placid hotel appeared before the North Elba-Lake Placid Joint Review Board on Wednesday to ask the board to amend its past approval of their project to reflect the new branding.
Cambria is part of the Choice Hotels group, which also includes the Quality, Comfort, Sleep, Clarion, EconoLodge and Rodeway brands. Homewood Suites and Tru are part of the Hilton brand family.
Cambria touts itself on its website as offering “upscale essentials for the modern traveler,” highlighting “little indulgences” such as bars with local craft beers, menus with local flavors and spa-inspired bathrooms.

LAKE PLACID — Weather has hampered efforts to upgrade Main Street over the past week, but work is continuing as planned for the most part.
Construction crews managed to replace a fire hydrant at Mirror Lake Drive near intersection of Saranac Avenue Wednesday, April 21 before shutting down operations due to snow, according to Haley Breen, community development director for the town of North Elba and village of Lake Placid. That meant work on the stormwater management system at One Main Park was put on hold. More snow was expected for the following day. Weather-permitting, work was to continue on the One Main Park project and the installation of a new water main.

Opting out of marijuana sales would be a wasted opportunity | News, Sports, Jobs

Apr 22, 2021
For local town and village officials wringing their hands, trying to decide whether to opt out of issuing licenses for marijuana sales and on-site consumption in their municipalities, we have three words.
Take the money.
It’s not dirty money. As of March 31, recreational marijuana is now legal in New York state for people 21 years or older, just like other vices such as alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, which are sold in a variety of locations throughout our communities. Marijuana would only be sold at licensed dispensaries.
There will be a 13% tax on sales of marijuana products — giving a 3% cut to municipalities and 1% to counties. That money could be useful when times are tough. And let’s face it, when it comes to funding local government, times are always tough.

Saranac Lake considers short-term rental regulation | News, Sports, Jobs

acerbone@adirondackdailyenterprise.com
SARANAC LAKE — The village board is considering regulation of short-term vacation rentals and will hold a public work session Monday to discuss a possible STR permit system.
This will not be a public comment session, but there will be a public hearing before the law is voted on. Public comment can also be made at regular board meeting or by sending mail or email to the village clerk.
STRs are a hot topic in the Tri-Lakes, which has an economy heavily reliant on tourism. In nearby Lake Placid some residents say the rentals eat up the affordable housing stock and cause problems with neighbors. Others say they rely on the income they get by renting out their home, part of their home or second home, and that it allows for more visitors.
