Covid-19 in Fiji: 684 new cases, five more deaths

That compares to 468 cases and 11 deaths in the previous 24-hour period.
Health Secretary Dr James Fong said 12 other Covid-positive people had died however, he said their deaths were not caused by the virus but due to serious pre-existing medical conditions.
Dr Fong said all the victims were unvaccinated against Covid-19.
* A 73-year-old woman from Namoli Village in Lautoka presented to the Lautoka Hospital Emergency Department in severe respiratory distress on 19 July. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died on the same day.
* A 96-year-old woman from Nadera in Nasinu died at home on 22 July.
* A 67-year-old woman from the capital Suva also died at home on 22 July.

台风"烟花"登陆在即 江浙沪等地需防范持续强风雨_京报网

中央气象台消息，今晨8时，今年第6号台风“烟花”距离浙江舟山仅95公里左右，预计将以每小时15公里左右的速度向西北方向移动，于今天中午至傍晚在浙江象山到江苏启东一带沿海登陆（台风级，12～13级，33～38米/秒）。登陆后强度逐渐减弱，并有可能在华东地区长时间回旋或滞留。请沿海地区高度重视持续性强风雨带来的不利影响，不抱有侥幸心理，加强防御。
过去一天，受“烟花”影响，浙江杭州、绍兴、嘉兴、宁波、舟山、金华等地部分地区出现大暴雨，绍兴、宁波局地特大暴雨（250～311毫米）；浙江东部沿海还出现10～12级大风，沿海岛屿局地13～15级。
中央气象台今晨继续发布台风橙色预警和暴雨橙色预警：预计今天，黄海南部、东海、台湾海峡及钓鱼岛附近海域、长江口区、杭州湾、江苏中南部及沿海、上海及沿海、浙江及沿海、福建中北部沿海、台湾岛西部沿海将有6-8级大风，阵风9-11级，其中东海大部、黄海西南部海域、浙江中北部及沿海、长江口区、杭州湾、上海及沿海、江苏东南部及沿海的风力有9-11级，阵风12-14级，台风中心经过的附近海域或地区风力可达12-13级，阵风14-16级。浙江中北部、上海、江苏南部、安徽南部、台湾岛南部等地的部分地区有大雨或暴雨，其中，浙江北部、上海、江苏东南部、安徽东南部等地的部分地区有大暴雨，浙江北部局地有特大暴雨（250-360毫米）。
气象专家提醒，台风“烟花”具有路径复杂、影响范围广、风雨潮叠加、登陆后陆上维持时间长、累计雨量大等特点。预计今天（25日）白天至29日，浙江中北部、上海、台湾南部、江苏南部、安徽中南部等地累计降雨量为200～500毫米，局地可超过700毫米；最大小时降水量40～60毫米，局地可达80毫米以上。目前浙江北部、安徽南部等地已触发局地山洪气象风险红色预警，请听从相关部门指挥，注意安全。
除台风外，未来三天我国南北两端均将出现降雨：内蒙古中东部、东北地区西部、西北地区中东部、华北北部和东部等地部分地区有大到暴雨，局地大暴雨；西藏中东部、川西高原、云南的部分地区有中到大雨，局地暴雨。因东北地区午后到前半夜对流活跃，请公众防范雷暴大风及冰雹天气带来的不利影响。

Professor Kwesi Aning of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC) has said the work of Committees of Parliament goes beyond an individual.
He said this in response to calls for Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agypong to be removed as Chair of the Defence and Interior Committee following his verbal attacks on journalists in Ghana, whiles speaking on Good Evening Ghana Thursday July 22.
Scores of Ghanaians are signing a petition for the removal of Mr. Agyapong.
He has been referred to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for his utterances against a journalist with the Multimedia Group, Erastus Asare Donkor.Mr Agyapong on Friday, July 9, is reported to have allegedly threatened to attack Mr Asare Donkor, “for the journalistic work that the latter undertook during the recent shootings and killing incident at Ejura” on his television station.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) will recognise results of COVID-19 tests run by people on their own if they use any of the personal test kits (PTK) approved and listed by the World Health Organization (WHO), says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.
He said this while responding to queries on whether there were PTKs approved for use by the MOH after some PTKs were advertised for sale by medical clinics.

CHIKANKATA, Zambia, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Friday launched a power plant in Chikankata district in the southern part of the country, saying it showed the government's commitment and resilience in ensuring that the country's electricity needs were secured.
China's hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro is the main contractor of the project.
The commissioning of the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station was expected to add an additional 750 megawatts of power to the national grid.
Lungu said the country has witnessed increased demand for electricity over the years resulting in increased investment in power generation and transmission infrastructure.

Fiji has recorded eleven new COVID-19 deaths and ten people succumbed to the virus at home as they did not get medical treatment on time.
Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said with the high numbers of new daily cases, the ministry has witnessed an increase in severe cases of coronavirus.
Dr Fong in a statement released tonight said the Health Ministry has also seen an increase in deaths as number of new daily cases surge.
“Two women in the Central Division died of coronavirus at home, they are an 82-year-old woman of Samabula and a 56-year-old woman of Vatuwaqa. They were not vaccinated,” he said.

Suhuyini Is A Foolish MP – Ken Agyapong Fires Back


 
Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has verbally attacked his colleague lawmaker for Tamale North Alhassan Suhuyini who petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to invite him before the Privileges Committee of Parliament.
Mr Agyapong said he has not achieved anything in life and therefore he wants to set Ghana ablaze.
Suhuyini had said he felt obliged to raise the issues against his colleague Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong on the floor of the House because of his background as a journalist.
This comes after the Speaker Alban Bagbin has referred Mr Agyapong to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for his utterances against a journalist with the Multimedia Group, Erastus Asare Donkor.

86-YEAR-OLD AILING WOMAN SUBJECTED TO ABUSE; FOUND LOCKED UP IN THE HOUSE FOR HOURS

An 86-year-old paralyzed woman of Mazabuka’s Stage 2 Compound was found locked up in the house for hours on Friday in what neighbors are describing as a daily abuse.
A Byta FM News crew rushed to the house after a tip off from neighbours and found Sofia Mukweke, a Stroke patient locked up in a two roomed house that she shares with her daughter without food.
Some neighbors accuse the daughter, Mary Lambi of mistreating the old woman with some suggesting she beats up, accusations that she denies.
Lambi dismisses the accusations and tells Byta FM News that she only leaves her mother to look for food and money for rentals.
