NORTH CAROLINA – After enjoying warm afternoons in recent weeks, many of us had to turn the heat back on Thursday morning.

Record lows were broken or tied Thursday in Asheville, Charlotte, Fayetteville and Raleigh
Record highs have been outpacing the number of record lows in recent decades
A 2016 study showed the number of record highs could outnumber the number of record lows by 15 to 1 at the end of this century
Several cities in the state tied or set a new record low for April 22.
In recent years, we have not seen many new record lows in North Carolina. Like much of the rest of the United States, the number of new record highs has been greatly outpacing the number of record lows over the last few decades. ....

Back in 2006, when Scott Shuford was Asheville’s planning director, he reluctantly accepted a friend’s invitation to attend a meeting about the impact of climate change on local governments. 
“I didn’t see how a two-degree temperature change could affect the community,” he recalled, referring to the predicted rise in earth temperatures in years to come. “But I agreed to attend, thinking it would only be about 15 minutes. 
“After about an hour-and-a-half I came out of the meeting drenched in sweat.”
All the plans he had drafted up to that day suddenly seemed to have overlooked an unsettled future fraught with unanticipated challenges. Those two degrees of temperature change meant greater threats of weather extremes of torrential rains, devastating floods, and landslides, and of their opposites, extended drought and wildfire.  ....

GOLDSBORO, N.C. It s 6 miles as the crow flies from the childhood home of Michael Regan to the shuttered coal plant that helped light up this city of 35,000 people.
During the 1980s, the plant s three coal-fired generators were industrial monoliths on the edge of town, pulsing out nearly 400 megawatts of electric power to Wayne County and east-central North Carolina.
It was also when Regan, the first Black man nominated to lead EPA, had his first asthma attacks, a condition triggered by heat, allergens and air pollution. ....

NORTH CAROLINA – If last year seemed really soggy to you, it s not just you. New data from the State Climate Office of North Carolina and the National Centers of Environmental Information shows 2020 was one of the wettest years on record for the state.
