7,900 Schools in Sokoto, Bauchi Benefit from USAID's Early Grade Reading Materials

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has distributed a total of nine million early grade reading materials to 7,900 schools in Sokoto and Bauchi States, designed to improve learning especially at the basic education level.
Speaking during the Northern Education Initiative (NEI) Plus grand national project close out ceremony in Abuja recently, the Chief of Party, USAID NEI Plus, Mr. Nurudeen Lawal highlighted its achievements over the past five years, noting that the project, implemented in collaboration with major local, state, federal and international education establishments, has also increased access to basic education for over 269,000 out-of-school children, half of whom are girls; and improved reading outcomes for close to a million children in Bauchi and Sokoto States. ....

USAID Ensures Access to Education for Out-of-School Children' in Northern Nigeria'

Mr. Nurudeen Lawal, the Chief of Party USAID Northern Education Initiative spoke to Funmi Ogundare and explained the various strategies used and how the agency had partnered with different stakeholders at the state and federal levels in the last five years. The objective is to provide basic literacy opportunities to out-of-school children especially in Sokoto and Bauchi States, to enable them find their feet, among other issues. Excerpts:
USAID is implementing the Early Grade Reading across Nigeria, what led to its introduction?
For learning to take place, it must start with reading as reading is the beginning of learning. USAID is leading the support across different countries to improve reading outcomes. The USAID’s Education Strategy Goal one is focused on improving reading skills for 100 million children in primary grades worldwide. USAID donates textbooks to Oyo primary school pupils

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has distributed over 10,000 textbooks to 2, 450 public schools in Oyo State to help improve their reading skills
The USAID Northern Education Initiative and Chief of Party, Nurudeen Lawal handed over copies of Yoruba Early Grade Reading materials ‘Je Ka Kawe’ to the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (Oyo SUBEB), Dr Nureni Adeniran, at the commission’s headquarters in Ibadan.
Speaking, Dr Adeniran said the state government remains committed to investing in the future of children in public schools through education.
He thanked the United States government for being a worthy partner in the Seyi Makinde-led administration’s vision to ensuring all children learn to read and write fluently, especially in their mother tongue. ....
