Winchester parkrun back up and running for first time since March 2020

Covid lockdown restrictions meant that parkruns throughout the UK had been cancelled since March 14 2020.
Event director David Watson was delighted that arrangements for the safe return of this popular community-based fitness event went so well. He gave special thanks to the 40 volunteers who helped to make sure that the event ran smoothly.
These 5km parkrun events are open to everyone; they are free, safe and easy to take part in. There are more than 500 parkruns throughout the UK. They take place every Saturday morning at 9am. The Winchester course is at the North Walls Recreation Ground.
The organisers are keen to emphasise that these are not ‘races’ - they are ‘runs’! Participants do like to set their personal targets, though. Walkers, and those wanting to participate with pushchairs and dogs (on leads), are also welcome. ....

Civic chiefs express support for community pavilion plans at North Walls Rec

PLANS for a new sports pavilion part paid for by community fundraising appears to be back on track.
Residents in Hyde in Winchester had been furious when the city council said it was reviewing the Hyde Pavilion scheme because costs were climbing above budget.
Fundraisers had raised more than £200,000 toward the £800,000 of replacement building at North Walls Recreation Ground. But all tenders received were at least £150,000 over budget.
The Town Forum, comprising city councillors representing the city wards, agreed to support proposals to amend the design/specification for the pavilion and keep it within budget.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the scheme and that the £595,000 funding approved in January 2020 is still available. ....

Pavilion Project will not be axed by Winchester City Council

THE Pavilion Project will not be axed by Winchester City Council, its leader has insisted.
Uncertainty surrounded the future of the scheme after the council declared it would be reviewing its budget in December in the light of the collapse in income caused by coronavirus.
Cllr Lucille Thompson has claimed that chiefs are working closely with the Pavilion Project community group to ensure the hub at North Walls Recreation Ground is replaced.
She said that the council’s pledged funding of £595,000 remains available.
But she added that the plans may be ‘brought into scale’ of the council’s budget for 2021/22, which is likely to be £3.7million less than 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Review of the Year – 2020 in Winchester | Hampshire Chronicle

Here is the second part of our Review of the Year:
JULY
A WINCHESTER woman has been crowned the winner of this year’s Great British Sewing Bee.
Clare Bradley beat stiff competition and impressed judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant to be awarded the title in the BBC One show.
Upon being announced as the winner, she said: “I feel really surprised. Crikey. I do hold myself to high standards and because other things I have gone in for are things I have trained for like exams and more exams - this was something I did for fun.”
The streets are bustling, the shops are filled – and for the first time in 13 weeks, Winchester’s pubs, cafes and restaurants are open, but not as we have known it. ....
