City works to transform unusable properties into viable commodities | News, Sports, Jobs

manich@leaderherald.com
JOHNSTOWN The Common Council Monday night worked on ongoing efforts to transform old, formerly unusable properties into something productive.
The council passed a resolution at City Hall to advertise for city-owned property at 126 W. Fulton St.
“This is the former Demi’s leather property,” said Mayor Vern Jackson.
The city owns the property located at 126 W. Fulton St. But the city wants to sell the property to the public and returning it to the tax rolls, in a manner which will promote the highest and best use.
City Department of Public Works employees from March 3 through 5 razed the rest of the former Demi’s building at 126-128 W. Fulton St. and carted it away after a collapse. ....

Vidalia Restaurant Week: Athens, Winder chefs selected to participate

The highly-touted Vidalia onion will soon pack shelves in supermarkets this month, and in Athens and Winder two restaurants are making the most of the annual unearthing of this kitchen staple.
Four other chefs were chosen from Atlanta to Savannah to receive a shipment of this year’s first harvest during a time when restaurants are attempting a return to normal as vaccinations are softening the blow dealt by the coronavirus pandemic.
“The onion in general is the most widely used ingredient on the planet,” said Alex Friedman of Bistro. “The Vidalia onion  what makes it so cool is its sweet. You can literally eat the onion raw if you wanted. That sweetness makes it so useful in so many capacities.” ....

Large quantity of opioids stolen from Athens pharmacy

Thieves broke into Hodgson’s Pharmacy on South Milledge Avenue early Friday and stole opioids.
The amount of drugs stolen had not been determined when police made the initial report, but a store employee described the theft as a “very large amount of hydrocodone and oxycodone pills.”
Both are medications typically prescribed for pain.
Police responded to the pharmacy about 2:35 a.m. to a burglar alarm and found the glass broken out of a back door, according to the report.
The store’s surveillance video showed two men, both wearing dark clothing and gloves, break into the building.
One man is seen breaking the glass from a corner of the door, then they crawl into the store in an apparent effort not to trip the motion alarm, police said. The men were in the store about 10 minutes before they fled, according to police. ....

JOHNSTOWN Two culverts have been delivered to the city for projects due to start in March.
City Engineer Christopher Vose relayed details of the projects during his monthly report to the Common Council Monday night at City Hall.
Vose said the North Chase Street and South Chase Street culverts have been delivered. He said the city currently intends to start these projects in March, weather dependent.
