Mass. Fire Official Says Historic East Mountain Fire 95% Contained

5:43
The wildland fire that burned around a thousand acres of land in Northern Berkshire County last week is almost fully contained. The East Mountain Fire was the largest of its kind in Massachusetts in more than two decades. Scores of firefighters from around the region as well as state units battled the fire as it moved east from Williamstown to Clarksburg. Chief Forest Fire Warden for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Dave Celino says it hasn’t grown since last weekend. WAMC spoke with Celino about the historic nature of the East Mountain Fire, and what it says about the potential for future wildland fires in Berkshire County. ....

Environmental Studies Professor Talks about Benefits of Fire for Forests

I think the automatic response people have is, This is devastation, this is apocalypse, Henry Art said. Yet, it s not. It s part of what that system is adapted to do.

For me, it s part of nature. I think it s entirely appropriate to make fire lines around Mass Avenue where the fire could really do some harm.

But deep in the woods of East Mountain and Pine Cobble, where firefighters battled a wildland fire for four days this month, fire can be restorative to the ecosystem and beneficial to a particular species of pine tree.

Art, an emeritus professor of biology and environmental studies and a longtime member of the Williamstown Conservation Commission, was not criticizing the efforts of those firefighters and was as thankful as anyone for their efforts to keep the fire from encroaching on inhabited areas, like Massachusetts Avenue in North Adams. ....

Northern Berkshire Residents Prepared For The Worst As Historic Fire Neared

4:00
The historically large East Mountain Fire is approaching full containment in Northern Berkshire County, but it meant a tense weekend for locals on the fringes of the fire.
It’s taken days of hard work, dozens of agencies, scores of firefighters and almost a thousand acres of burned land for the East Mountain Fire to approach containment. While no structures have been impacted by the flames, area residents like Stephen Murray were faced with daunting choices as the fire expanded from Williamstown east over the weekend.
“Our house is sort of right on the border between North Adams and Williamstown along Massachusetts Avenue, said Murray. It s a parallel road to route two, which goes East-West, and lies right at the base of the Pine Cobble Mountain, which everybody is familiar with who lives around here. It s a really popular hiking spot. And you can actually walk right out my backyard and head right up to the top of mountain from there.” ....

Active Berkshire Wildland Fire Is Largest In Massachusetts In 12 Years

4:19
Massachusetts officials say an ongoing wildland fire in Northern Berkshire County is the state’s largest in over a decade.
The East Mountain Fire began as a brushfire in Williamstown on Friday, and has spread thanks to wind events over into the Clarksburg State Forest. More than 120 firefighters from 19 surrounding towns and state units are attempting to contain it. Williamstown Fire Chief Craig Pedercini spoke Monday afternoon.
“I can report at this point we ve burned about 800 acres and we are 60% contained at this time, he said. No structures are threatened by the fire. One firefighter was taken to the hospital over the weekend. He s in good condition and remains hospitalized this time. Today the Mass National Guards and the Massachusetts State Police were conducting, are conducting air operations including water drops to help contain a fire.” ....
