COVID-19 scrambles meetings in North Port and Venice

SOUTH SARASOTA COUNTY – COVID-19 pandemic-related social distancing concerns have prompted the cities of North Port and Venice both to juggle their planned public meetings.
In North Port, Interim City Manager Jason Yarborough canceled the North Port City Commission’s Tuesday meeting, as well as Thursday’s Code Enforcement Board hearing.
Meanwhile, the Venice City Council hosted its regularly scheduled hybrid meeting but did so without a quorum in chambers at Venice City Hall – which meant board members treated the day as a cross between a workshop and a meeting.
North Port spokesman Josh Taylor confirmed that the cancelations were COVID-19 related. ....

North Port Aquatic Center hours of operation, schedule may change

NORTH PORT – Changes in the schedule and fee structure for programs at the North Port Aquatic Center will be the subject of a special meeting of the North Port City Commission at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Tricia Wisner, assistant director of parks and recreation for the city of North Port, said the proposed changes come from both attendance trends tracked by the city and feedback from users through surveys and other comments.
The surveys were conducted online and live during special events.
The biggest proposed change water park users would notice involves a proposal to open at 10 a.m. instead of 1 p.m., after monitoring officials noted the frequency and time of day the pool had to be closed because of nearby lightning strikes. ....

Final argument submitted in Wellen Park-North Port contraction suit

NORTH PORT – Developers seeking to quash a bid by residents for the city of North Port to contract city limits and de-annex land west of the Myakka River argued that the process itself is resulting in financial harm that cannot be fixed even if the city of North Port ultimately decides to keep its borders intact.
That’s essentially the gist of the latest statement filed Jan. 15 by attorney David Smolker on behalf of Wellen Park LLLP, Mattamy Tampa/Sarasota LLC, Neal Communities of Southwest Florida and GB WV LLC.
That came in response to the closing argument filed Jan. 7 by Luke C. Lirot, attorney for West Villagers for Responsible Government. ....

Judge to rule in early 2021 on suit against North Port contraction bid

NORTH PORT – Wellen Park made its case Tuesday to 12th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Hunter W. Carroll in its suit to end the contraction petition process started by residents seeking to separate themselves from the city of North Port.
And while the bulk of the two-plus hour hearing was taken up by the testimony of attorney Jeff Boone – the attorney partly responsible for the land annexations in question, as well as the legislation that created the West Villages Improvement District – Carroll noted that his decision will come down to a concept in Florida law that says all contracts wrap into them all laws that existed at that time. ....

North Port Hampton Inn & Suites now open for business

NORTH PORT – The new Hampton Inn & Suites North Port opened for registered guests at 3 p.m. on Thursday, giving the city its first new hotel since 1973.
“It turned out beyond our expectations; it looks fabulous,” said Mike Postle, vice president of construction and project management for Lodgco, the Mount Pleasant, Michigan-based hospitality company that brought the new 100-Room Hampton Inn to 5664 Tuscola Boulevard. “It’s an extremely sharp hotel, and I think North Port is going to be very proud to have it in their community,” he added. “It took a little bit longer with COVID than we wanted it to take, but now that it’s here, I think it was well worth the wait.” ....
