Gordon Shelton Memorial walk-a-thon for NJ people with disabilities

On treadmills and local roads, volunteers and donors raised $140,000 during the 19th annual Gordon Shelton Memorial Walk-a-thon on Sunday.
The walk, held virtually for the second straight year due to COVID-19 restrictions benefits SCARC, a non-profit organization that serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The total exceeded SCARC s goal of $135,000, which was higher than previous years when the event was held in person at the Sussex County Fairgrounds.
SCARC will continue to accept donations online until June 30. To contribute visit bit.ly/2021SCARCWalk.
This year s event included 43 teams, according to SCARC Foundation Chief Development Officer Chris Hemmer. After kicking off with a Zoom dance party from 11 a.m. to noon, participants were invited to get their exercise on the treadmill or by traveling along nearby roads or trails instead of walking together at the fairgrounds. ....

North Warren High School student Krystina Corriveau killed in crash

The death of North Warren Regional High School senior Krystina Corriveau has left a community shaken and her family remembering her amazing strength and kindness.
Diagnosed at birth with cystic fibrosis, Krystina was not one to broadcast her illness; instead, she battled it silently for 18 years, according to one of her sisters.
She has been more than courageous in that fight, and not a lot of people knew that, Kim Corriveau said.
Krystina, 18, died Sunday morning at Newton Medical Center after her Honda Civic crashed into a tree on Birch Ridge Road in Hardwick around 8 a.m., said New Jersey State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. ....

North Warren high school community upset with firing of vice principal

If the governor s plan is approved, North Warren s state aid would drop from $3.69 million this year to $2.74 million in 2021-22 a decrease of more than 25% that would mark the second steepest among Warren County schools. Statewide, only seven districts would have a percentage decrease higher than North Warren.
According to Bilotti, the district will lose $4 million in total state aid from the Senate bill and has already lost 38 staff members because of the budget cuts.
The Board has taken a deliberate and careful approach to these reductions over the last several years, always considering the impact on student instruction, to protect the educational experience of every student as much as possible, reads Bilotti s email to the New Jersey Herald. The reductions approved (Monday) night were not the first, and sadly, will not be the last caused by the state funding changes. ....
