Startup mentorship program has secured 100 Spartanburg jobs

Three Spartanburg startups will benefit from a $15,000 peer-based loan fund as part of the Start: Me Spartanburg program launched by the University of South Carolina Upstate’s George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics and the Northside Development Group.
Loan winners will be announced on May 1 at the fifth annual Start: Me Graduation and Showcase following a 14-week training program from 14 micro-entrepreneurs in Spartanburg’s Northside community, according to a news release. The graduation will be held at the Hub City Farmers’ Market at 489 Howard St. near downtown, where entrepreneurs will market their goods and services from 8 a.m. to noon. Graduation will begin at 9 a.m. ....

Spartanburg development projects to keep up with in 2021

1. County courthouse and city/county municipal complex
If you ve driven down Daniel Morgan Avenue lately, you ve probably seen the big crane and progress on the Spartanburg County courthouse project. The parking deck and nearby central energy plant will be completed by June 30, 2021, Britt said.
After the courthouse is complete, a new joint city/county municipal building will be built as part of the same project funded by a penny sales tax.
Britt said the courthouse and new municipal complex will be a good adrenaline spurt for downtown merchants. It ll make it so much more walkable for our associates at the county and in the city. And it will be a big complex. ....

Six file for Spartanburg County Council District 6 seat

Six file for Spartanburg County Council District 6 seat
Five of the hopefuls are Republicans, and one is Democrat.
The seat became vacant last month when Nutt resigned to be sworn into his state legislative seat. Nutt, a Republican, was unopposed in his election to fill the seat of outgoing District 34 Republican state Rep. Mike Forrester.
Filing for Nutt s seat on county council are Republicans Steve Wunder, Michael Dawson, Jessica Coker, Robert Briggs, and Karen Puckett.
Lekesa Kesha Whitner was the lone Democrat to file, and thus will not be on the primary ballot. She will appear on the March 23 special election ballot, according to Spartanburg County Elections Director Henry Laye. ....
