Brian Burton, associate vice president for Academic Affairs and a professor of Management at Western Washington University, plans to retire on Aug. 31, 2022.
“By late next summer I will have had the honor of working with Dr. Brian Burton for 14 years, the last nine of those in the Provost’s Office. In his role as associate vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Burton has been instrumental in seeing the university through myriad initiatives and projects. From co-chairing the Strategic Planning Committee to his critical participation in the university’s response to the pandemic, he has served the university with dignity and thoughtfulness,” said Western Provost Brent Carbajal. ....

Businesses have a moral duty to explain how algorithms make decisions that affect people

Increasingly, businesses rely on algorithms that use data provided by users to make decisions that affect people. For example, Amazon, Google, and Facebook use algorithms to tailor what users see, and Uber and Lyft use them to match passengers with drivers and set prices. Do users, customers, employees, and others have a right to know how companies that use algorithms make their decisions? In a new analysis, researchers explore the moral and ethical foundations to such a right. They conclude that the right to such an explanation is a moral right, then address how companies might do so.

Villanova School of Business (VSB) professor Jonathan Doh, PhD, has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Management (AOM) the largest and most prestigious professional organization of management scholars globally. Election as an AOM Fellow is a permanent designation and honors a select group of scholars who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management and distinguished themselves at the top of their fields.
