The Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office’s Facebook post went viral after sharing its “once in a lifetime catch” in the Detroit River.
The “real life river monster” measures just shy of 7 feet long and weighs a whopping 240 pounds. It’s “one of the largest lake sturgeon ever recorded in the U.S.,” according to the agency.
Officials estimate that the creature has roamed Michigan’s waters for more than a century.
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office edited its April 30 Facebook post to clarify that the “river monster” was “quickly released back into the river after being processed. ....

DETROIT, Michigan - A 100-year-old sturgeon, a fish weighing 240-pounds, was caught last week in a Michigan river.
Caught in the Detroit River, the fish is one of the largest lake sturgeons ever caught in the United States, according to the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office.
Labeled a river monster, the sturgeon weighed 240 pounds and measured 6 feet, 10 inches long.
Based on its length and weight, officials said the fish was likely more than 100 years old.
The sturgeon was released back into the river after being measured.
The conservation office published a photo showing one of its staff members lying next to the fish in a boat. ....
