Neihardt Center to launch "Summer on the Lawn" outdoor program series with Justin Miller and Tri-Tones

Bancroft author Justin Miller and singing group The Tri-Tones will kick off the new  “Summer on the Lawn” outdoor series at the Neihardt State Historic Site in Bancroft,  NE. This event will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2-4 p.m. Admission is free. 
A 2000 graduate of Bancroft-Rosalie Schools, Miller will discuss his recently published book “Grandpa’s War,” about his family’s experiences in the Korean War. Miller is no  stranger to publishing. His mother is a published children’s book author and Justin has  done illustrations for her. 
The Tri-Tones, a musical trio out of Fremont, will follow Miller’s talk with a selection of  songs from the Korean War era. Consisting of Rose Parde, Cindy Wagner, and Pam  Spevak, the group has been performing throughout Nebraska si ....

History Nebraska held a Walking Malone History: The Visible and the Invisible event on Sunday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Community members took a stroll through one of Lincoln’s most historic neighborhoods on Sunday. History Nebraska  partnered with NeighborWorks Lincoln, Hawley Hamlet and the Preservation Association of Lincoln (PAL).
People got the chance to discover old and new homes, churches, gardens and parks that make up the historically African-American neighborhood. They also heard perspectives from local and former Malone residents.
Former Husker men’s basketball player and longtime Lincoln Police officer Albert Maxey was a speaker, along with former University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Ed Wimes and former Lincoln Public Schools teacher Karen McWilliams. Lincoln Planning Department historic preservation planner Ed Zimmer led the tour. ....

In her master’s thesis – “Journey to Freedom from Nebraska Territory” – Gail Shaffer Blankenau shines a light on a dark part of early Nebraska history by addressing slavery through the eyes of Celia and Eliza Grayson, two young Black women who were enslaved by Nebraska City founder Stephen F. Nuckolls.
Unlike the man who owned them, Stephen F. Nuckolls, their names largely faded into history.
“A lot of people don’t realize there were enslaved people in Nebraska,” said Gail Shaffer Blankenau, a professional genealogist and researcher from Lincoln. ....

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The building on the corner of 16th and O streets, which once featured bricked-in windows and a leaking roof, now has new life as apartments and commercial space - and a home on Lincoln’s list of historic places.
About a century ago, Lincoln had one of the highest per capita automobile ownership rates in the nation, and prominent attorney Edmund Strode purchased the property downtown to serve as a repair shop and dealership. The Strode Building has hosted numerous auto-related businesses since it opened in 1917, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. ....
