Now, Dr. Stephen Baxter, Associate Professor of Medieval History at the University of Oxford, has discovered some surprising facts about the depth, speed, and sophistication of the survey which led to the famous Domesday and other texts, which formed a useful  medieval database  that is still examined by historians today.
An Extensive Yet Efficient Survey
One of the most surprising finds from the study published in the
English Historical Review  is that the first draft of the survey covering England south of the River Tees was completed in just 100 days. Dr. Baxter  says:
“Domesday Book is at once one of medieval England s best known and most enigmatic documents. The reasons for and processes behind its creation have been the subject of debate among historians for centuries. This new research, based on the earliest surviving Domesday manuscript, shows the survey was compiled remarkably quickly and then used like a modern database, whe ....

History will not look kindly on this week's Trump prompted Capitol riot, says presidential historian

Stateside s conversation with Gleaves Whitney
After this unprecedented week of political violence fueled by President Trump himself, followed by a flood of resignations from his own top cabinet members, how will history remember the final days of the Trump presidency?  Presidential historian
Gleaves Whitney was the long-time director of the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University, and now serves as the Executive Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.
“I have never seen anything quite like what we saw on Wednesday in all of my study of history,” Whitney said.
As a historian, Whitney thinks about how events will be written in history and what conclusions will arise from these events. He explained that the storming of the Capitol building will be monumental in America’s history. ....

Opinion: Hope for humanity

Many of us read William Golding’s
Lord of the Flies in high school — and it’s still being taught. The 1954 novel depicts the gradual descent into barbaric darkness by a group of English schoolboys shipwrecked on a small, deserted island. Its portrayal of innate human depravity was hailed at the time for its unblinking “realism.” Only… it was total bulls# t.
In his superb 2019 work
Humankind: A Hopeful History, Dutch historian Rutger Bregman documents that Golding had no knowledge of behavioral science and was hardly an impartial judge of children’s propensities. Rather, he was an alcoholic prone to depression who beat his own kids. “I have always understood the Nazis,” Goldman once said, “because I am of that sort by nature.” So he made up the story, and it wasn’t about children’s dark nature, but his own. ....

Russian Historian Sentenced To 12.5 Years For Butchering Lover

Russian Historian Sentenced To 12.5 Years For Butchering Lover
12/25/20 AT 9:44 PM
A Russian historian and Napoleon enthusiast was sentenced to 12-and-a-half-years in prison for murdering and dismembering his young lover last year.
The Saint Petersburg trial, which spurred activists to voice growing anger over domestic abuse in Russia, began in June after delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Oleg Sokolov, 64, had admitted murdering 24-year-old Anastasia Yeshchenko but said he committed the crime against his former student and lover in the heat of the moment during an argument.
Judge Yulia Maximenko sentenced Sokolov on Friday to 12 years and six months in a strict regime penal colony on charges of murder and the illegal possession of firearms. ....
