Things to do on National Trails Day, plus open-water stand-up paddling

Ever try crossing from Santa Catalina to Dana Point on a stand-up paddleboard? Don’t, unless you are with a pro. I ran into Terri Plunkett in Two Harbors on the western side of the island in mid-April. She and her team were preparing to do a relay-style 40-mile crossing.
“I have done countless SUP events around the world but, hands-down, this was the most challenging event I ever participated in,” Terri emailed me afterward.

Anthony Vela, a former L.A. County lifeguard, stand-up paddling coach and competitor, organized the event. Vela and his company, Performance Paddling, train intermediate and advanced paddlers. Sixteen students, ages 32 to 73, participated in the crossing. Anthony chatted with me about the logistics of open-water stand-up paddling. Here’s an edited version of our conversation. ....

Supervisors Want More Options To Reduce $1.6-million Shortfall

Sonora, CA Tuolumne County needs to pass a fiscal year 2021-22 budget ahead of July 1st, and the current shortfall is estimated to be around $1.6-million.
CAO Tracie Riggs delivered a presentation to the board of supervisors that was much more upbeat than recent years. Referencing the deficit, Riggs says, “That is the smallest amount that I can remember us having to deal with in a very long time. It is because we are so lean and have been so conservative. But it also is a budget that has no concessions and no layoffs being recommended, and I’m really happy we were able to get there.” ....

Students Planted Giant Sequoia Saplings

Pinecrest, CA–Pinecrest Expedition Academy celebrated Arbor Day this year by partnering with Visit Tuolumne County and planting a new grove of Giant Sequoias at Kennedy Meadows. The President and CEO of Visit Tuolumne County Lisa Mayo talked about the project by saying.
“Visitors love to come to our region to see the Tuolumne Grove in Yosemite National Park, and we hope this new grove will entice more people to come up the Highway 108 corridor and explore the beautiful scenery of our area. Planting this new grove was also a fun way to engage a young generation and inspire them to continue to serve as destination stewards.” ....
