.-James Cohan is presenting TIGHTROPE: ECHO!?, an exhibition of new work by Elias Sime, on view at 48 Walker Street from March 19 through April 24. This is Sime’s fourth solo exhibition at James Cohan. TIGHTROPE: ECHO!? is accompanied by an essay written by curator and anthropologist Meskerem Assegued, with whom Sime co-founded the Zoma Museum.
Elias Sime deftly weaves, layers and assembles materials into abstract compositions that suggest topography, figuration, and sublime color fields. The history of his materials hold meaning, as they are the backbone of all communication systems, whether they be telephone or computer. They suggest the tenuousness of our interconnected world, alluding to the frictions between tradition and progress, human contact and socia ....

New trustee joins Bennington College board

BENNINGTON — Odili Donald Odita, an abstract painter who received his master of fine arts from Bennington College in 1990, has joined the college’s board of trustees.
Odita was born in Enugu, Nigeria and lives and works in Philadelphia. He is an abstract painter exploring color both in the figurative historical context and in the sociopolitical sense.
In addition to general trustee duties, Odita will serve on the college’s education and community life committee.
“Odita’s creative, professional and sociopolitical expertise will be an immeasurable asset to our work,” said board chair Nick Stephens. “We look forward to working with him as we continue to strengthen Bennington’s position in higher education.” ....

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. - On her days off, you can sometimes find Greenwood Elementary School teacher, Sarah Pena, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
She takes some of the things she learns back to her students.
I think art is a universal language because students can come into a classroom and they can have the same materials in front of them, said Pena. “And they re able to approach it from their own perspective. ....
