Ambler, James M. (1848–1881) – Encyclopedia Virginia

James Markham Marshall Ambler was born on December 30, 1848, at the Dell in Fauquier County, the second of four sons and second of five children of Richard Cary Ambler, a physician, and Susan Marshall Ambler. At age sixteen Ambler joined the 12th Virginia Cavalry Regiment and served during the closing months of the Civil War. He attended Washington College in Lexington from 1865 to 1867 and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, from which he graduated in 1870.
Ambler practiced medicine for four years before joining the U.S. Navy in 1874 as an assistant surgeon. His duty assignments included service aboard the screw tug USS ....

Bristow, Joseph A. (1838–1903) – Encyclopedia Virginia

Joseph Allen Bristow was born at Stormont in Middlesex County on September 17, 1838, the son of Larkin Stubblefield Bristow and Catherine Seward Bristow. He attended local private schools and began the study of medicine, but on July 18, 1861, before he completed his studies, he joined the Confederate army. Bristow was a sergeant in the 24th Virginia Cavalry Regiment when he was captured near Petersburg on July 28, 1864. He spent six months in the prison camp at Elmira, New York, before being exchanged on parole on February 25, 1865.
His father had died during the war, and Joseph Bristow returned to manage Pleasant View, the family farm. On January 24, 1866, he married Mary Mildred Roane, also of Middlesex County, and they had two sons and one daughter before she died at the end of 1871. On October 3, 1875, Bristow married Lucy Elizabeth Chambers, of Person County, North Carolina. They had five sons and five daughters. A nephew, Myon Edison Bristow, served as Virginia’s comm ....

Thomas, Philip (1831–1888) – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
Philip Thomas was a farmer and slave trader in Pittsylvania County. Born in 1831, by late in the 1850s he had partnered with William A. J. Finney in a slave trading business. The two worked together for several years buying enslaved men, women, and children locally and then either transporting them to the slave-trading hubs of Richmond and Alexandria or sending them directly south for resale. Both earned substantial return on their efforts, aided by improvements in infrastructure and communications. A year into the American Civil War (1861–1865), Thomas joined the 5th Virginia Cavalry and stayed with the regiment through the remainder of the conflict. After the surrender at Appomattox, however, he was without land or business and so moved to Georgia, where he worked as a carpenter and died in 1888. ....

Eppes, Richard (1824–1896) – Encyclopedia Virginia

Richard Eppes was born Richard Eppes Cocke on May 2, 1824, in Prince George County. His father, Benjamin Cocke, managed the family estates that his wife, Mary Eppes Cocke, had inherited at Eppes Island, in Charles City County; Bermuda Hundred, in Chesterfield County; and City Point (later Hopewell), in Prince George County. Benjamin Cocke did not prove a successful planter, however, and he made a living through a blacksmith shop and shad fishing. When he died in 1836, the estates returned to Mary Cocke’s control, and their only surviving child became the sole heir. In accordance with his mother’s wishes to keep the surname Eppes associated with her family estates, Cocke legally changed his name to Richard Eppes on October 26, 1840. ....
