Senate approves death penalty abolition over GOP objections

RICHMOND, Va. – A stoke of the pen is all that is left for the abolition of executions in Virginia. A bill to do away the death penalty won final approval in the Virginia Senate Monday and now heads to Gov. Ralph Northam, who has said he will sign it.
The measure would make Virginia the first Southern state to abandon capital punishment.
State lawmakers gave final approval to the bill Monday, a dramatic turnaround for a state that has executed more people in its long history than any other.
The legislation would make Virginia the 23rd state to stop executions. ....

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia will need thousands of health professionals to vaccinate millions of people, and Vinton dentist Dr. Sarah Wilson says sheâs ready to lend a hand.
âWeâre used to giving injections every day, so itâs something that weâre certainly capable of doing,â Wilson told WDBJ7. âAnd we really want to help out, work with our health care partners and help get people protected.â
Emergency legislation advancing in the General Assembly will expand the pool of trained professionals who are available to deliver the COVID-19 vaccines. ....
