Why snow removal crews are moving away from rock salt
Road crews have been forced to pre-treat and de-ice Central Virginiaâs roads in recent weeks. However, environmentalists are urging localities to take a closer look at what theyâre putting on the roadways. Rock salt is the most abundant and cheapest way to clear the roads, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Foresters like John Jastrzembski have studied the environmental impacts that sodium chloride has on Mother Nature. âThereâs no doubt itâs a necessary thing, but there are environmental consequences of using salts,â he explained. âThere are always traces of the salt deposits whether they leach into the waterway or groundwater or move downriver to the Chesapeake Bay.â

RICHMOND, Va. Nick Lopez said his passion for pushing snow and ice off of pavement started when he graduated high school more than a decade ago.
âI have always found it interesting to go out and clear snow out of parking lots,â Lopez recalled. âItâs one of those passions that Iâve had for a long time.â
Lopez operates Virginia Snow and Ice Management Inc. based out of Fredericksburg during the winter season.
He also runs a landscaping company during the warmer months.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Virginia Department of Transportation is advising drivers to avoid the roadways on Sunday as snow continues to fall in Central Virginia.
Preparations for snowy weather began on Saturday night, and as temperatures begin to fall, crews are treating icy roads with salt and sand to increase traction. Current predictions for the Richmond area show one to three inches of snow on Sunday, followed by rain.
VDOT officials said Sunday that crews will be focusing on possible refreezing on wet roads Sunday night into Monday morning, working in 12-hour shifts until all roads are safe and passable.
