'Mesmerizing': With opening of Grande Palazzo, Long's vision becomes reality | News, Sports, Jobs

“I can’t wait to get old.”
That’s what Todd Lewis, president of Shoe Fly Corp., said after watching Jeff Long’s presentation of the Graystone Grande Palazzo on Thursday morning at the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club.
Long, who now owns 15 Graystones in seven counties and three personal care homes, offered a video presentation of his project to convert the former Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital into a building featuring both independent living and personal care units.
“We’ve been doing this for 4 1/2 years,” Long said. “When I started, I thought it would be two years. I thought it would cost about $20 million and we’re now at $40 million and counting. It has been a fun project.” ....

Operation Our Town on Thursday presented its top award to recently retired Altoona Police Chief Janice Freehling.
The Community Partnership Award is presented annually to Blair County law enforcement individuals who have demonstrated their commitment toward making the community a safe place to live and raise families.
“I congratulate Chief Freehling for all of your years of service and hours of support to Operation Our Town. She is someone who always had the right response to crimes,” said Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks.
Freehling, Altoona’s first female police chief, retired March 1 after 44 years in law enforcement, the last 20 years as chief. ....

Pandemic challenges law enforcement | News, Sports, Jobs

The coronavirus pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to law enforcement in 2020, Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks told members of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club on Thursday via Zoom.
“In 2020, we had more homicides here than in the previous 10 years. The number of fatal drug overdose deaths increased in 2020 as a result of the pandemic and the imposed lockdown by the governor,” Weeks said.
The influx of drugs has been a big part of the problem.
Weeks said the problem spiked after the end of mandatory sentencing in 2013.
“We have seen an influx of pure and cheap heroin and a dramatic increase in drug overdose deaths. In 2018, we saw a massive rise in methamphetamine that continues to plague our community,” Weeks said. ....

Chamber sets breakfast club for March 11 via Zoom
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club will meet at 7:45 a.m. March 11 via Zoom.

Chamber executive says virus relief a priority | News, Sports, Jobs

A U.S. Chamber of Commerce official said Thursday that pandemic relief is the chamber’s top priority and part of that is liability protection for businesses.
“They are being asked to implement health measures and are facing lawsuits from state or local governments saying they are not doing enough despite doing all of the recommended procedures,” said Kevin Courtois, executive director of government affairs for the U.S. Chamber’s Great Lakes Region.
“The number one priority for the chamber is pandemic relief to help businesses that are struggling,” he told members of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club via Zoom. “We are looking at working with Congress for our number one goal, pandemic relief. President (Joe) Biden’s plan does not include liability protection.” ....
