At Historic Brattonsville, stories emerge of ‘freedom seekers’ who didn’t wait for emancipation
A new exhibit at the McConnells, S.C., site will tell the stories of four enslaved men who ran away to freedom.

For years, Historic Brattonsville has sought to tell the stories of the enslaved people who lived, toiled and died there. Now the historic site in McConnells, S.C., is adding to its collection of narratives by telling the stories of enslaved men who escaped.
Using newspaper records from the 19th century, Brattonsville historian Zach Lemhouse has identified four “freedom seekers” – Bob, Lewis, Henry and a man named James Williams who fled Bratton Plantation in search of freedom. ....

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad. Texas historians are ramping up a new effort to document freedom seekers who escaped through Texas. It may seem odd to talk about a 200-year-old issue as an “emerging field,” but that’s what is happening among historians who are only now uncovering traces of the Texas Underground Railroad. At a virtual town hall meeting hosted last week by the Organization of American Historians and the National Park Service, experts peered into the murky past surrounding freedom seekers in Texas. Peter Wentz Farmstead added to Underground Railroad network

The historic Peter Wentz Farmstead in Montgomery County has been selected by the National Park Service for recognition as a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. The Worcester Township property will join more than 680 other places in the network database.
“The recognition of historic architecture, such as the Peter Wentz Farmstead, and the multisensory experience will help to educate future generations about Black history in our backyard and beyond,” Ken Lawrence, vice chair of the county Board of Commissioners, said in a statement. ....

Overview
Washtenaw County Parks holds over 5,400 acres of land, including many high quality natural areas.  Most of the county’s parks also have a less well-known historic significance. 
Some of the most historically significant parks include:
Parker Mill County Park - The historic Parker Mill, one of the many mills that once dotted the length of the Huron River, is located within the boundaries of the park. Prior to the Civil War and the Parkers arrival, Washtenaw County was a lumbering capital as well as the nation s breadbasket.  Located in Ann Arbor, the park features an operating historic gristmill with tours on Sundays in the fall. It also has walking trails and connects to the City of Ann Arbor’s Gallup Park. ....
