The Sandwich Conservation Commission has always taken a dim view of homeowners illegally hacking away at trees and brush in protected conservation areas.
Sometimes property owners clear these wild areas to improve the view from their own homes and back yards. And sometimes homeowners cut back invasive plants and vines and believe they are performing a service.
In the past yearâpossibly as a result of people spending more time at home due to coronavirus restrictionsâincidents of homeowners cutting into the resource areas seem to have increased.
At almost every bimonthly meeting lately, the conservation commission hears about deforestation of protective buffer zones. Earlier this month, after hearing about illegal clearing behind three homes on Knott Avenue in the Town Neck section of town, the commission members decided they must crack down on this chopping. ....

Tree House Brewery Hit With New Legal Challenges

Three new legal salvos this week were fired over the bow of a proposed taproom and retail beer sales operation on Town Neck Road.
Boston attorney Daniel J. Bailey III has filed complaints with the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspection and the Sandwich Conservation Commission alleging that a building permit should not have been issued to Tree House Brewing Company.
Tree Houseâs proposed business is located within a flood zone and a protected coastal wetland resource area, Mr. Bailey said in his letter to the state public safety officeâs board of appeals.
Mr. Bailey said he is bringing the complaint on behalf of four couples who live on Freeman Avenue, which is adjacent to the proposed taproom and beer distribution site. ....

Long-Delayed Army Corps' Erosion Report Now Available | Sandwich News

A long-awaited report detailing the Cape Cod Canalâs role in starving the townâs beach of sand was made public this week by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
In short, the draft report says the jetties at the Cape Cod Canalâs east entrance entrance interrupt the natural transport of sand and âstarve the downdrift littoral system of sediment needed to maintain a stable shoreline.â
The US Army Corps also concluded, after years of study, that while the jetties are not the only cause of Sandwichâs shoreline erosion, the interruption caused by the jetties âsignificantly exacerbates erosion along the downdrift shoreline and is the primary cause of the ongoing threat that such erosion poses to the shoreline and surrounding coastal community.â ....

Town Neck Beach Closes For Bourne Sand Delivery

Bulldozers rolled into the Town Neck Beach parking lot , Thursday, January 28 in anticipation of a very large special delivery.
On Monday morning, weather permitting, the town of Sandwich will be receiving about 15,000 cubic yards of sand from the town of Bourne.
Natural Resources Director David J. DeConto said Town Neck Beach will be closed to the public for at least the next two weeks as the earth moving equipment place the sand on the beach and grades it into place.
âWe would love to use the sand to fill in the dune from the west end to the boardwalk, but we donât know how far we can get it to stretch,â Mr. DeConto said. ....
