LAPS News:
The Los Alamos School Board met for a regular meeting Tuesday, March 9. President Melanie Colgan opened the meeting with a moment of silence in memory of Las Cruces School Superintendent Karen Trujillo.
“She touched many lives as an educator and is going to be sorely missed,” Colgan said. 
The board also celebrated several recognitions. Art teachers from around the district were honored as part of Youth Art Month. Britt Williams, Aspen’s art teacher, spoke for the elementary art teachers in saying that they are thankful to work in a district that supports the arts. ....

New Mexico Higher Education Department And Lawmakers Seek To Expand Scholarships For Aspiring Educators

SANTA FE The New Mexico Higher Education Department and lawmakers are seeking to expand financial aid programs aimed at supporting New Mexicans pursuing degrees leading to teacher licensure.
A total of $6 million is recommended to sustain and expand three existing programs including:
Grow Your Own Teachers Scholarship;
Teacher Preparation and Affordability Scholarship; and
Teacher Loan Repayment Program.
“Improving educational outcomes for all New Mexicans is vital, and we must work together to support aspiring educators and fill current vacancies,” Acting Higher Education Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez said. “Great teachers create great students and expanding these scholarship and loan-for-service programs is a vote of support for both our educators and our children.” ....

New Mexico House Kicks Off Historic 2021 Session

SANTA FE The New Mexico House of Representatives called to order its 55th Legislature at noon Tuesday.
This year’s 60-day session will be a historic first in state history, with the majority of the session taking place virtually due to COVID-19. 
Recognizing the pandemic-related challenges facing New Mexicans, House Democrats are focused on delivering relief to hard-working families and small businesses, and solutions to uplift a generation.
Legislative priorities this session include economic recovery, health care, civil rights, rural infrastructure, climate change and education.

Rubio bill would phase out private prisons

  LAS CRUCES - New Mexico, which now leads the nation in the use of private prisons, would be required to wind down that practice under a bill prefiled ahead of this year’s legislative session by Rep. Angelica Rubio, D-Las Cruces.
House Bill 40, called the Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act, would prohibit the state from entering into any new contracts or agreements for the operation of private detention facilities.
It would also allow for the termination of existing contracts if the inspection report by the Department of Corrections finds that the facility is out of compliance. ....
