Trip to Forbuoys newsagents, Hereford to buy Smash Hits in 1980s

Forbouys newsagents in Whitecross Road, Hereford. Picture: Peter Davies/We Grew Up In Hereford
THE bright red shop sign of Forbuoys newsagent in Hereford’s Whitecross Road might be gone, but the name still lives on.
Peter Davies took this picture of the newsagent in 1980, while he was living across the road from the shop.
He shared it in our We Grew Up In Hereford Facebook group, before some of the 9,000 members started to share their memories of the shop.
Maryse Ozguc said Gary Rawlings used to be the manager at Forbuoys, and Jane Mackney said she used to work there. ....

Eerie site of a long-abandoned Herefordshire station

IT is hard to imagine trains rumbling through this overgrown site now.
But for over 100 years, locomotives steamed through Holme Lacy as they travelled on the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway.
Opened in 1855, the line carried goods and passengers between Hereford Station and Gloucester, with stations at Holme Lacy, Ballingham, Fawley, Ross, Mitcheldean Road, Longhope, and Grange Court, with halts at Blaisdon, Weston under Penyard, and Backney.
But as car ownership and road travel grew in popularity, passenger numbers and freight traffic gradually dropped.
The line between Hereford and Ross was to fall victim to the Beeching cuts, which aimed to improve efficiency of the railway system by closing many of Britain s smaller stations and branch lines. ....

Remember when the Wye froze over?

THE weather has been relatively mild this winter, with only a few truly frosty mornings in Herefordshire so far.
But back in the 1960s, it was a different story entirely, with temperatures so low that the river Wye froze over.
Ken Joel, a member of our We Grew Up in Hereford Facebook group, shared this picture of the frozen river near the Old Bridge in Hereford.
The photograph, taken by his father, Frank Joel, predates the construction of the Greyfriars Bridge and is believed to date from the winter of 1962-1963, when the ice on the river was reported to be more than a foot thick, and strong enough to walk on. ....

Remembering our Christmas parties, pantos and nativity shows

WHETHER it was the pantomime at Wiggins, or a children’s party at Saunders Valve, hundreds of people have been reminiscing about their memories of Christmas.
The Hereford Amateur Pantomime Society (HAPS) was set up in 1982 by members remaining from the disbanded Wiggins panto group.
In the We Grew Up In Hereford group on Facebook, which now has nearly 8,000 members, Patricia Jones remembered: “I was a ‘Wiggins’ baby! The parties were brilliant, so were the pantos when you were a little older.
“If you sang on stage you would be given a box of Liquorice All Sorts. I was up there at every opportunity. My dad worked in the melting for many years. His name was Ivor Mahoney. We have, sadly, lost him. ....
