The Covid-19 pandemic has been a nightmare for higher education, but during the 2020-21 academic year it largely spared the nation’s sparsely populated campuses from rising political tensions. Kenneth Strother Jr., director of operations in the Department of Public Safety (DPS), has been named assistant vice president for public safety, effective June 1.
“Community caretaking is our mission at public safety,” said Kenneth Strother Jr., who has been named assistant vice president for public safety. “I am honored and excited that I can continue my service to the campus community in this new role.”

Strother has served as director of operations in public safety since January 2019, managing the day-to-day operations of the department and serving as second-in-command. He will succeed Paul Ominsky, who is retiring on June 1 after leading DPS for 11 years. ....

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Police Department (UPD) was recently recognized for its voluntary compliance with 166 Texas Law Enforcement Best Practices.
The best practices cover training and policy directives over topics such as Search and Transport, Use of Force, Hostage Incidents, Internal Investigations, Sexual and Other Unlawful Harassment, and dozens more.
There are more than 2600 Police Agencies in Texas, and the TAMUT Police Department is proud to be among the 173 agencies recognized. UPD is one of only two law enforcement agencies in Bowie County to receive the recognition, and joins 5 other Texas A&M University System departments who have been recognized as well. ....
