Up to 34,000 Deaths from European Coal Plants, Study Suggests

A new pan-European study has found that as many as 34,000 people could be dying prematurely as a result of exposure to the emissions produced by coal plants throughout the continent. Although the official findings of the research say that concentrations of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) are responsible for at least 16,800 deaths each year, it’s feared that air quality is actually far worse than the estimations given by regional monitoring stations, hence the revised higher figure.
The study is yet more proof that coal-fired power plants have a disastrous impact on the lungs of both those living in their vicinity and even people hundreds of miles away, due to the travelling abilities of PM2.5. What’s more, coal plants are also the single biggest driver of global warming, which is why it’s imperative that governments follow the lead of scientists to slow climate change by transitioning to cleaner sources of energy generation as quickly as poss ....

Coal-fired power is the single-largest driver of global temperature rise and phasing it out of the world’s electricity supply as soon as possible will be key to meeting the world’s climate goals, scientists say.
The burning of coal for power also causes the release of pollutants that can be seriously harmful to human health, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) – tiny particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter that can penetrate deep into the lungs when inhaled. ....

Doha: The Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute (CyI), have signed a collaboration agreement to estimate and predict contamination risks and associated impacts from the atmospheric dispersion of radionuclides accidentally released by a major industrial facility in the Middle East.
The purpose of the QEERI-CARE-C collaboration is to develop a methodology for environmental hazard risk and vulnerability assessment in the Middle East. In addition, to test this methodology by estimating the risk to the population in the State of Qatar, in case of a severe accident at a nuclear or industrial risk site. ....
