The Pennsylvania Bar Association has named its 2020 Commission on Women in the Profession (WIP) Award on behalf of H. Robert Fiebach, senior counsel in Cozen O’Connor’s Commercial Litigation Department and co-chair of the firm’s Legal Malpractice Group. Formerly known as the Promotion of Women in the Law Award, the Robert Fiebach Promotion of Women in the Law Award honors Pennsylvania law firms and solo practitioners, corporate law departments, and other organizations providing legal services that have instituted programs or initiatives that help women lawyers continue and advance in their careers while maintaining a work/life balance. This year’s honorees are the law firms of Berner Klaw & Watson, and Lanard and Associates. ....

Bar Buzz: Convicted lawyer faces sanctions

John Michael Huberty, 48, who runs his own downtown Anoka law practice, was given 20 days to respond. Notice that the Feb. 23 petition for disciplinary action has been served was admitted at the Supreme Court on March 8.
Huberty is subject to sanctions ranging from a simple reprimand to disbarment. The Supreme Court will ultimately decide what is appropriate.
He pleaded guilty to an amended felony count of third-degree sexual misconduct on Feb. 12, 2020, and was given a stayed prison sentence with five years’ probation. He also was ordered to spend 30 days in the Anoka County jail and complete 30 days’ work release. ....

Bar Buzz: Gun play gets lawyer suspended

Marcel Leshaun Thompson, 31, may not apply for reinstatement until Jan. 21, 2024.
Thompson was convicted in August 2019 of making terroristic threats and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, both felonies. He received a stayed prison sentence two months later and was placed on five years’ probation.
“I think the three-year discipline is representative of the conviction of a felony involving crimes of violence,” said Lawyers Professional Responsibility Office Director Susan Humiston.
Her office could not verify that the lawyer under suspension is the same Marcel Thompson who, according to the city of Minneapolis website, served on the city’s Human Rights commission in 2019. ....
