LONDON (Reuters) - Portfolio managers increased their exposure to petroleum slightly last week, focusing mainly on Brent, but positions remained rangebound as OPEC+ production discipline was offset by a new wave of coronavirus infections.

Hedge funds and other money managers bought the equivalent of 14 million barrels in the six most important petroleum futures and options contracts in the week ending April 20. (tmsnrt.rs/2QzX1Tl)

Foreign inflows into Japanese stocks slow on virus worries

April 22 (Reuters) - Foreign inflows into Japanese stocks slowed in the week ended April 16, on concerns about the economic slowdown due to a resurgence of coronavirus cases in Japan.
Overseas investors bought 27.4 billion Japanese yen ($253.73 million) worth of stocks last week, after purchasing 575 billion yen in the previous week, data from Japanese exchanges showed on Thursday.
They bought a net 58 billion yen worth of derivatives, but sold 31 billion yen in cash equity markets in the last week, the data showed.
Japanese shares have declined this week as investor fears about potential lockdowns in the country’s biggest cities cast doubts over the prospects of an economic reopening. ....

Contango and backwardation are two common terms that investors and traders in commodities markets often hear. Understanding them helps gauge the price, demand and supply in the market for a particular commodity.
A trader or investor refers to a market condition for a commodity as contango when the futures price (for that commodity) is trading at a premium to spot price. This difference can arise as futures contract accounts for the spot price plus the cost of carry, storage and insurance. So often, the later-date futures contract could be more than just the underlying spot price, depending on the time until delivery. ....

April 23 (Reuters) - Russia’s rouble rose on Friday before a widely expected interest rate move as tensions with Ukraine de-escalated, while most emerging-market currencies fell but were set for a third week of gains on continued dollar weakness.
The rouble rose about 0.2% to a one-month high of 75.0350 to the dollar. It had jumped 1.6% on Thursday after Russia said it was withdrawing troops from near the border with Ukraine, apparently calling an end to a military buildup that had alarmed the West.
Russian stocks fell 0.3%. The MSCI’s index of EM stocks rose 0.6% ....
