Alabama News From the West Alabama Newsroom– A historic church in Selma is commemorating the anniversary of the first mass meeting of the Voting Rights Movement. In addition to honoring some of the foot soldiers. Tabernacle Baptist Church stepped into history 58 years ago when it held the very first mass meeting of the Selma Voting Rights Movement. “The first mass meeting was May 14th, 1963,” said Dr. Verdell Dawson. The church is having a program to commemorating the day Thursday evening at 6:30. “The purpose of this is to tell the untold story of Tabernacle and the contributions that Tabernacle made to the Voting Rights Movement,” said Dawson. ....
Alabama News Updated: The city of Selma honors the life and impact of native son Dr. Frederick Douglas Reese. Reese was a key figure in the struggle for voting rights in Selma. March 21st has been designated Dr. Frederick D. Reese Day in the city. A program honoring Reese was held at Selma High School Monday afternoon. Followed by a grand caravan through the city. “This is just an honor to be here to observe this great, momentous occasion,” said Johnny Moss III. “It’s long overdue.” “This day is necessary for young people to understand that whatever position you’re in, you can always strive to achieve and succeed,” said Patricia Stewart. ....

Alabama News Updated: From the West Alabama News Network– Preparations for the Annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee are underway in Selma. And organizers say this year’s Jubilee will be a global event. “And it’s going to take place in a totally virtual format. That is due to wanting to fight COVID and keep as many people safe as possible, while at the same time staying true to the commemoration and the celebration of the Voting Rights Movement, Bloody Sunday and the Selma to Montgomery March.” Jubilee Principal Coordinator Drew Glover says anyone with internet access will be able to attend this year no matter where they are. And that means Jubilee 2021 has the potential to be the most attended Jubilee ever. ....
