Australia's economy may be 'in better shape' than before the pandemic

Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says Australia’s economy is most likely in “better shape” than before the pandemic as figures reveal the economy grew 3.1 per cent over the December quarter last year.

“It’s the classic V-shaped recovery, when coronavirus hit Australia’s economy fell as hard as it’s ever fallen and now over the past two quarters to the end of December it’s risen as much as it’s ever risen before,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

Mr Greenwood said the economy had not “completely recovered” from the pandemic as of December 2020, but it could be expected the economy was now in better shape than before the pandemic.

“We’re in the beginning of March, another quarter has passed by since these numbers were printed and you can only expect that the Australian economy now is even in better than it was when it entered the pandemic.”

Qantas revenue down $7 billion from same period last year due to COVID closures

Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says Qantas’ total half year revenue is down some $7 billion from the same period last year - showing the significant impact of the pandemic on the airline.

This comes as Qantas posted a first half loss of around $1.1 billion.

Mr Greenwood said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is “optimistic” he can get his airline back in the air for around 7,500 people whose jobs depend on it.

The Qantas CEO wants the state and federal governments to come to an agreement not to shut the state borders anymore by the end of April and also wants his airline to be allowed to resume international flights by the end of October.

"He says . the government itself has to make a decision very quickly as to what will happen at the end of JobKeeper as to whether those jobs actually disappear and those people are in hardship or whether indeed some other form of support is created for them," Mr Greenwood said. ....

AGL s $2.7 billion asset write-down partly due to impact of wind and solar contracts04/02/2021|5min
Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says energy company AGL s write-down in its asset value of $2.7 billion is in part attributable to wind and solar contracts entered into and the coronavirus pandemic.
You d naturally think is all about coal-fired power stations but it s actually not. It s partly about the amount of money they have to put aside to basically rehabilitate some of the land these power stations are on when they re decommissioned, he said.
But the second part is their wind and solar farms. They entered into contracts going way, way back, thinking and presuming they d get certain prices. Those prices have now collapsed in electricity because of coronavirus and a lack of industrial output. ....
