Large galaxies are known to strip the gas that occupies the space between the stars of smaller satellite galaxies.
In research published today, astronomers have discovered that these small satellite galaxies also contain less molecular gas at their centres.
Molecular gas is found in giant clouds in the centres of galaxies and is the building material for new stars. Large galaxies are therefore stealing the material that their smaller counterparts need to form new stars. ....

JACKSON (AP) A Wyoming man is shooting for the stars in retirement.
Seventy-seven-year-old Michael Adler of Jackson Hole is a retired engineer who takes photos of stars, galaxies and nebula through telescopes.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports Adler started out 10 years ago with telescopes and camera equipment in his driveway.
Adler s hobby progressed to building a small observatory.
He won an award for a photo he took of the 2017 total solar eclipse that was visible in Wyoming.
Adler serves on the board of the nonprofit Wyoming Stargazing.
He gives talks about terrestrial and extraterrestrial geology for the group Geologists of Jackson Hole. ....

Insight-HXMT gives insight into origin of fast radio bursts

The latest observations from Insight-HXMT were published online in
Nature Astronomy on Feb. 18. Insight-HXMT has discovered the very first X-ray burst associated with a fast radio burst (FRB) and has identified that it originated from soft-gamma repeater (SGR) J1935+2154, which is a magnetar in our Milky Way.
Insight-HXMT is the first to identify the double-spike structure of this X-ray burst as the high energy counterpart of FRB 200428. This discovery, together with results from other telescopes, proves that FRBs can come from magnetar bursts, thus resolving the longstanding puzzle concerning the origin of FRBs.
These results from Insight-HXMT also help explain the emission mechanism of FRBs, as well as the trigger mechanism of magnetar bursts. ....
