New Delhi:
A ‘pitch black’ planet, darker than charcoal has been discovered. About 470 light-years away, it absorbs 99 per cent of light, making it one of the darkest planets ever found.
The planet was discovered by researchers from Keele University in the UK, who used NASA’s Kepler telescope to show that it is ‘darker than charcoal.’ The dark planet is named WASP-104b. ....

With the help of the European Southern Observatory s Very Large Telescope (ESO s VLT), astronomers have discovered and studied in detail the most distant source of radio emission known to date. The source is a radio-loud quasar a bright object with powerful jets emitting at radio wavelengths that is so far away its light has taken 13 billion years to reach us. The discovery could provide important clues to help astronomers understand the early Universe. ....

Summer and Work Experience Placements | Cavendish Astrophysics

The David and Bridget Jacob Internship Programme (NOW CLOSED: selection taking place)
The Cavendish Laboratory and the Institute of Astronomy recognise with deep gratitude the support of Mr David and Mrs Bridget Jacob and their establishment of The David and Bridget Jacob Internship Programme. The Programme will support one 4 - 10 week summer internship placement, alternating annually between Cavendish Astrophysics and the Institute of Astronomy. The student should be from a non-Oxbridge higher-education institution within the UK, and should be between their penultimate and final year of undergraduate study. In summer 2019, applications are sought for a placement within Cavendish Astrophysics.
We encourage applications for this placement in any of the following broad areas: ....

Saturn, top, and Jupiter as seen on Dec. 13, 2020, a week before their closest approach, when the two planets may appear as a single point of light.
Jupiter and Saturn will align in the night sky today (Dec. 21) in an event astronomers call the great conjunction, and you can watch it online with webcasts from The Virtual Telescope Project, Slooh and more.
Tonight s great conjunction also nicknamed the Christmas Star marks the closest apparent encounter of Jupiter and Saturn in nearly 400 years. The two planets will be closest to each other in the sky tonight, which is also winter solstice, and may be viewed as one point of light, appearing only a tenth of a degree apart. They will remain in close alignment for a few days and will be easily visible to the naked eye when looking tow ....
