One of the people who helped organize Vancouver s 2010 Winter Olympics says the growing cost of building venues and infrastructure may make it unfeasible for a single city to be awarded future Olympic Games.
Historically, the International Olympic Committee has embraced the concept of the Games being a multi-sport competition attracting athletes from hundreds of countries to a single location, said Dave Cobb, who was the deputy chief operating officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). ....

The head of Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics says planning and hosting a 2030 Games would be a regional event to help lift B.C. from the COVID-19 pandemic doldrums.

And, said John Furlong, such a Games bid would involve multiple communities and need neither new venue construction nor need government funding outside a federal security commitment.
“The biggest event in the world needs an owner,” Furlong told the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade (GVBOT) April 16. “I think we qualify.” ....

Is there an appetite in Vancouver to bid for another Olympic Games?
The former CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games (VANOC), John Furlong, is making a pitch to the business community Friday.
Furlong is the keynote speaker for a virtual event hosted by the Vancouver Board of Trade to discuss the potential benefits of hosting another Olympics.
According to the BOT, the 2010 games generated more than $1 billion in local development and attracted more then 600,000 visitors to the region. The games united the country and showcased Vancouver and Whistler to the world.
In previous interviews with CTV News Vancouver, Furlong says the work of putting together a bid to host the 2030 Olympic Winter Games has been underway for a year and a half already. ....
