Opinion: PNE should be restored as a BC crown corporation to ensure a strong future


Plans to partially open Playland last weekend were pushed to later this month at the earliest due to prevailing health safety concerns, and yesterday they confirmed the cancellation of the 2021 Fair as they could not make the numbers work not even with a downsized event.
Revenue from facility rentals have taken a huge hit as well, given that events are now virtually non-existent.
To reduce the haemorrhage on their reserves, they resorted last year to laying off nearly all of their unionized staff and half of management.
Even if the PNE is able to survive for another year of difficult conditions, it would take at least 15 years for them to pay off this level of debt, but with the great impact of reducing the level of investments on programming. Reducing these investments that bring the masses to the events held at Hastings Park would surely send the PNE into a vicious cycle of a downward spiral for its long-term revenue outlook. ....

'Ghost sign' from the 1920s pops up on Vancouver's East Hastings

Driving down East Hastings on Saturday morning, Patrick Gunn of Heritage Vancouver came across a startling sight: a 1920s-era “ghost sign” that had been revealed during the demolition of a next-door building.
“I almost drove off the side of the road,” he said with a laugh.

The sign is huge, about 20 feet wide and 13 feet tall. Painted directly onto the side of a 1915 building at 2615 East Hastings, it urges the masses to “Specify 4X Bakery Products (by) Canadian Bakeries Ltd.” ....

BC 2030 Olympics' potential legacies of housing and transportation pondered

BC leaders in business, tourism, and sport convened earlier this month for a virtual public discussion on how hosting the 2030 Olympic Winter Games could align with the province’s long-term goals, while also providing a jump start to the battered tourism industry after the pandemic.
During an event held by the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, former VANOC president and CEO John Furlong maintained that the Games could be re-hosted in Metro Vancouver, Whistler, and possibly elsewhere in the province as the sports venues and infrastructure already exist, and more importantly because of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) flexible reforms on hosting requirements. ....

The 1938 facade is actually hiding another facade from the 1913 Globe Theatre.
