Jury finds man guilty in Clark County attempted murder case

A man accused of stabbing his grandfather in the neck in an unprovoked attack at his home in the Minnehaha area was convicted Friday of attempted first-degree murder.
The Clark County Superior Court jury returned the guilty verdict against 27-year-old Zakary A. French after deliberating for about an hour.
In addition to the charge, jurors also found the crime was committed against a family member with a deadly weapon, as well as an aggravating factor egregious lack of remorse that allows for an exceptional sentence. Zimmerman spoke at length about his views of the fatal shooting by police of Kevin Peterson Jr. with District Court Commissioner Abigail Bartlett. Their conversation was recorded on a hot mic earlier this week.

Prosecuting Attorney Tony Golik declined to comment on the substance of Zimmerman’s statements, saying: “I think the action that we are taking speaks for our opinion.”
This is the first time his office has filed a blanket motion to block a judge from presiding over cases, Golik said. ....

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) Clark County District Court in Southwestern Washington has condemned Judge Darvin Zimmerman and a prominent law firm has called for his resignation for critical comments of a Black man killed by police.
Zimmerman, whose comments in the courtroom were posted on YouTube, described Kevin Peterson Jr. as “the Black guy they were trying to make an angel out of,” and said he believed he had a death wish and “was so dumb,” The Columbian reported.
The judge also said Peterson’s father had told a police chaplain he felt the shooting was justified but, “the next day, he wakes up with dollar signs in his eyes and George Floyd’s attorneys had already contacted him.” ....

A man accused in a lengthy police pursuit in June, in which he tried to strike several responding officers, was sentenced Monday to 13 months’ confinement.
Anthony James Hill, 35, no address provided, pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court to amended charges of third-degree assault on an officer, hit-and-run of an unattended vehicle and reckless endangerment.
Judge John Fairgrieve followed the attorneys’ agreed-upon sentencing recommendation of 13 months on count one, 90 days on count two and 364 days on count three, all to run concurrently. ....
