I grew up in Avondale and went to Avondale College. Mum and Dad owned a furniture business in Glen Eden, and my father was into racehorses, as well. Part of my job was to take the racehorses to the Avondale racecourse first thing in the morning before school. I got to wash them down, feed them, groom them and all those kinds of things. Initially I wanted to be a race caller. I got to hang around with famous race callers like Keith Haub, but I had another great passion and that was radio. ....

Residents are being asked to rummage through their cupboards and drawers for spare balls of wool.
Warkworth pensioner Sandra Haycock (pictured) is using the wool to knit warm clothes and blankets for newborns at Middlemore and Waitakere Hospitals.
“There are about 8000 babies born at Middlemore every year and of that number, about 800 will get sick and need to return to hospital during their first year,” Sandra says. “Sometimes it is just because the family does not have enough warm clothing.” T
he clothes are distributed by midwives, through the Wellness Foundation. Sandra says all types of yarn would be appreciated, acrylic or wool, one ball or a bag. ....

The Antarctic blast is continuing to wreak havoc across New Zealand as the wild weather settles in for a second day.
Aucklanders are waking up to a bitterly cold morning after shivering through one of the coldest nights of the year, with overnight temperatures plummeting into the negatives across the country.
A local state of emergency remains in place for Wellington s south coast as huge waves continue to pound the capital s coastline, with some reaching up to 6.5m overnight. Contemporary artist Kate Newby has returned to her family’s property at Te Henga for a peaceful yet productive homecoming.

Kate Newby’s childhood home was a pottery when her parents got the keys to it in the 1970s. At the time, it could only be accessed by gravel roads. They built the house up from a shell, installing upcycled materials, including windows they found on the side of High Street in central Auckland.
Set amid the Te Henga (Bethells Beach) bush, the home’s surroundings seem to foster creativity. Kate grew up across the road from filmmaker Briar March and down the way from her mentor, the artist Allie Eagle. ....
