Highland FFA Gets Soil and Water Conservation Grant

The Highland FFA is assisting the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) on a watershed management and creek sign project.
FFA Advisor and Agriculture Education Teacher Gina Trower says they’ve been awarded a $2,500 SWCD grant for students to learn about soil and water testing and conservation practices. Trower says the grant will be used to install signs identifying the nearby English River and Davis Creek, and they’ll help select the name for an unnamed English River tributary just east of Riverside, “They’re very excited. One of things in FFA, and even in agriculture education, we’re always looking for something new, something different, something that not every agriculture program or FFA does every year. This is definitely going to be a big one for us. I don’t remember the last ag teacher I talked to that said, ‘Yeah, we named a river last year.’ So the kids think it’s really cool because how many people can say that?” ....

One of those resources is to write grants from federal, state and corporate partners.
I was very active during my career as a superintendent in writing grants. I was successful in obtaining over $3 million in grant dollars for my districts throughout my career.
Washington County Schools are fortunate that we have The Washington County Riverboat Foundation, who has been a great partner in providing grant opportunities to the schools and we are thankful to them. The Highland Community School District continues to seek out and successfully apply for grants beyond what is provided by the Riverboat Foundation. I will highlight three grants the district has received in the last few weeks and what they will do for the students o ....

Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a known leader in the state when it comes to conservation adoption. For several years, the county has ranked high in the state for conservation cost-share allocation, cover crop adoption, and acres enrolled in the conservation reserve program. Much of this success derives from Washington county’s farmers and their expertise and leadership in agribusiness, innovation, and land stewardship.
The five elected soil commissioners and dedicated SWCD staff see the value of educating the next generation. Annually they invest their fundraising dollars from selling erosion control matting back into the community through youth scholarships, field trips, the Tree’s for Fifth Graders program and community conservation projects through a competitive grant process. ....
