Researchers develop a simple and efficient way to generate hemogenic endothelial cells

Researchers develop a simple and efficient way to generate hemogenic endothelial cells
Pioneering research into how our bodies manufacture the cells that make blood has moved us closer to regrowing tissues and organs. The findings also may let doctors grow the cells for transplantation into people to battle cancer, blood disorders and autoimmune diseases.
Researcher Karen K. Hirschi, PhD, of the Department of Cell Biology and the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, has developed a simple and efficient way to generate hemogenic endothelial cells. These cells are the first step in the production line of blood cells, and Hirschi s new findings provide a blueprint for creating them outside the body. ....

New York Tech researchers receive NIH grant to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis

New York Tech researchers receive NIH grant to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis
A New York Institute of Technology research team led by Olga V. Savinova, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM), has secured a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The $1.8 million grant, which includes a first-year award of $342,675, will support research to improve the understanding of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and deliver a new treatment for heart disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with heart disease, which also causes one in every four deaths. Researchers have long believed that atherosclerosis is a risk factor in predicting heart disease-related illness and death. The buildup of calcium salts in blood vessel tissue, kno ....

Okayama University research: Plates and belts -- a toolkit to prevent accidental falls during invasive vascular procedures

Okayama University research: Plates and belts a toolkit to prevent accidental falls during invasive vascular procedures
In a study reported in
Acta Medica Okayama
, researchers at Okayama University describe an innovative plate that confines patients to their beds while undergoing vascular procedures thereby preventing unforeseen falls
Patients undergoing hemodialysis (which requires the regular withdrawal of blood) often need to undergo interventional procedures that keep the blood vessels of the forearm dilated. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), the most common of these procedures, requires a surgeon to visualize microvessels within the arm using an X-ray while the patient lays supine on a motorized bed. Unfortunately, a complication that arises during PTA is the enhanced risk of falls from these elevated beds. Now, Assistant Professor OHARA Toshiaki from Okayama University and colleagues have developed a simple plate-like contraption which secures ....

Vascular Emergencies: Challenges and Solutions
Created with Sketch.
What is unique about all of the fields of medicine comprising vascular health care is that a good majority of our patients often require immediate life- or limb-saving care. Time is often of the essence, and a solid foundational understanding of how best to respond to these emergencies is paramount to provide the highest level of patient care.
In this edition of
Endovascular Today, we focus on a wide variety of emergent vascular conditions and what is currently known about their incidences, associated unique challenges, and potential treatment options. We have asked experts from leading centers to explain the essentials in a practical fashion, sharing their understanding as to best practices. ....
